One of the world’s most elusive sea creatures

True’s beaked whales are a rare species that are hard to track because they surface for air less than most other whales and prefer deep waters.

One of the world’s most elusive sea creatures

Scientists have struggled to track down the mysterious animals for years, but the first to film them were a group of students in the Azores, off the coast of Portugal, in 2013.
The video has only came to light when it was posted in the journal PeerJ yesterday as part of a new paper on the rare creatures.
Its aim was to get a better idea of the threat that humans pose to mammals like beaked whales, that are adept at deep sea diving.
True’s are named after Frederick W True, a curator at the United States National Museum, now called the Smithsonian.
