Essay by Eric Worrall
h/t Peta of Newark; In 2020, the BBC asked “should we give up flying for the sake of the climate?”. That same BBC defends the right of the climate elite to continue using private jets.
How many private jets were at COP27?
By Reality Check team
BBC News
There has been criticism on social media of delegates arriving at the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
The day before the conference began, hundreds of environmental activists stopped private jets leaving Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, by sitting in front of their wheels and riding around the airfield on bicycles.
…
What is the carbon footprint of private jet travel?
…
Emissions per kilometre travelled are significantly worse than any other form of transport.
…
A government spokesperson said: “This delegation travelled on one of the most carbon-efficient planes of its size in the world and carbon emissions from these flights are also offset.”
The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit’s international lead told BBC Newsthat focusing on world leaders taking private jets to COP27 was “missing the point”.
“The emissions are negligible compared to the impact of decisions and commitments made at these summits,” he said.
“If you want emissions to come down, you want leaders in the room and media, scientists and stakeholders asking the important questions.”

I love articles like this, because they give us a glimpse of the cruel medieval world I believe our climate elites are attempting to engineer.
The picture in my mind is the movie “The Hunger Games“, in which ordinary people are coerced into giving up automobiles, clothes washing machines and driers, air conditioners, home heating, and other modern conveniences. A world in which ordinary people are continuously exhorted to live low carbon lives of manual labor, drudgery and hardship, for the sake of the planet, while the elites continue to live high on all the luxuries they deny to everyone else, because of the alleged importance of their work.
If you have any doubts, ask yourself when the BBC and British Government plan to stop trying to grant moral passes to the elite, because of the alleged importance of their work.
BBC correspondents fly around the world all the time (and the same is true for other alarmist media, such as ITV, Channel 4). There are hudreds of political, scientific and environmental correspondents always on the move by air. They are all hypocrites, busy spreading fake news and their messages of doom and gloom.
The only standards the elite have are double standards.
Twice as many standards as the rest of us
It’s what makes them so good
Reporters from all the large media organisations frequently fly to exotic locations to report on stuff that could be easily be done by a local reporter. A sweet perk.
Standard policy for lefties to be hypocrites. Goes alongside no understanding of economics and a hatred of working people.
No reason in the world that the climate hypocrites couldn’t do the whole COP27 fakeshow via video conferencing.
….and via zoom all the movers and shakers announcing it’s universally agreed that forthwith no publicly paid official will remain airconditioned on their watch. Leading from the front and setting the example for all those who work in the great outdoors or under the iron rooves of our factories and workshops. Back to the future like the grandparents and all for the sake of the grandkiddies. Nick, griff, Greta, et al are lachrymose at the very thought.
Well, the servicing from sex workers and the steak dinners wouldn’t be as good via teleconference…
Well, if you took your mobile to maintain conference contact, both might well be better and less costly
so why should we take any notice of what this bunch of London based liars says anyway….
I notice nearly all headlines on the BBC sites start with “THE”, which immediately was educated into us as school children means “agenda driven opinion pieces” with (unlike what it tries to suggest) little basis in fact.
One rule for us and a special rule for the ELITE.
I received an email from England last weekend from a dairy farmer in Cornwall and this was the gist of it .
In 1950 there were 10.6 million cattle in the UK.
There were 50,225.,000 people.
There were 4 million registered vehicles.
There was no record of commercial flights
In 2018 there were 9.9 million cattle .
There were 66,400,000 people.
38 million vehicles on the road.
In 2004 there were 23 million commercial passenger flights in the world.
In 2018 there were 38 million passenger flights which did not include private or freight flights.
He then said .”I really would like to see the data that conclusively proves that cattle are the game changing contributor to global warming that the media would have us believe.”
So would I especialy knowing that there where once huge herds of wild ungulates burping huge amounts of methane
And knowing that methane is largely covered by water vapor making it insignificant
I’m sure I read somewhere that prior to the westward spread of humanity there were 50 million bison in the USA, or did I make that up?
You are right about the number of bison in 1800s in America.
https://allaboutbison.com/bison-in-history/1800s/
JohnC – Western US history, specifically the post Civil War period, is one of my hobbies. There are some estimates that the number of American bison may have been as high as 120 million. Either way, there were a LOT of bison.
LKMiller, JohnC.
Thanks.
Even if the number of bison was 50 million, and I appreciate we don’t actually know; and the average weight was half a ton/tonne {including all the little baby bison] – there would have been some 25 million tons of bison.
There are about 8 billion humans today.
An average weight might [ish] be 60 Kilos – about 132lb, or over nine stone [again allowing for babies and kids]; thus, there are about [arm-waving] 480 million tonnes of humanity. Not negligible.
Today, only about 20 times the mass of that one herbivore.
We’re widespread, but – maybe – not as deleterious as some watermelons would have the populace at large cowed into believing.
I certainly don’t think we are.
Auto
And the climate didn’t care-much like it doesn’t care about the number of cattle today.
And how many of the 35000 people attending the love-fest make these important decisions – my guess is just the ones in control of this nonsense
THERE WILL BE NO IMPACT from any of the “decisions” and “commitments” made at these “summits” (of stupidity), since CO2 doesn’t drive the climate and since in any event the developing nations will continue to thumb their noses and continue to pursue sane energy policies.
So any attempt to “justify” their hypocrisy by bloviating about their supposedly important works is nothing but an insult to one’s intelligence.
I’ve noticed that the ITV and BBC News people refer to Climate Change Deniers when any weather event is reported, along with the phrase “more and more obvious”
I did see something about the POTUS’s enormous carbon footprint for his day trip to Egypt and rousing speech.
If Sunak meeting Macron helps stop Channel crossings in rubber dinghies then that will have been worthwhile.
“If Sunak meeting Macron helps stop Channel crossings in rubber dinghies then that will have been worthwhile.”
…… mais ….. non.
I saw a report where french police were slashing dinghies about to leave and them being attacked by the “migrants”
If the COPs were intended to fight climate change, they would have been abandoned at least a decade ago. They achieve no breakthroughs.
They can not be expected to achieve a breakthrough, so long as Brazil, Russia, India and China prioritise wealth generation over climate emission reduction.
When a crisis happens, countries take action. See the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq or the recent Covid pandemic. That the COPs keep happening show that they are not responding to a crisis. They have another purpose.
So, what are COPS for? My opinion:
A) To keep the green movement happy. They are a small group in the West but large enough to swing a few seats and influential in the media. They want something to be done. This is something and it costs relatively little. Better jaw jaw than mitigate mitigate,
B) Having created the institutions, they have a life of their own. It’s no longer worth fighting against the big environmental charities and green journalists. It’s not a fight worth happening. They only talk to themselves, anyway.
C) Getting leaders together to talk without the pressure of “negotiations” is a good thing. It’s like Davos without the focus on banking. It also has more involvement from the developing nations who are under-represented at the post WW2 institutions.
COPs are good. But they are not about the environment for the people who matter.
COP has always been about fighting capitalism. With capitalism dead, the world population will naturally decrease to under 2 billion. (Do we have that many elites?)
With everything back to manual labor, even a few million elite will need lots of servants.
I’m off to the Caribbean
for my summer holidayto investigate the effects of climate change. Is that you Barry?
OK, BBC, which scientists flew to COP 27 via private jet to “ask important questions”? Since no important questions have been asked at COP 27 the answer is NONE!
As I understand it “emissions”, from whatever origin – planes, factories, cars, do not have any significant effect on the climate. They are probably bad for air quality and the environment. So the only problem with private jets is the hypocrisy of those flying them while claiming, mistakenly, they are bad for the climate. In fact, the more CO2 they produce the better.
As usual, the hypocrisy is blinding! The Church of Climatology are a Cult of Science Deniers! They want everyone to become Vegan, yet, don’t understand the role CO² plays in plant development? SMDH But, more likely they do, and it’s just one Giant Grift! The leftist are a Death Cult first & foremost!
The self appointed arbiters of truth are known as “Reality Checkers”…. (ministry of truth).
… can we please defund the far left BBC now?
Top comment on the private jet article is:
“If 9 of the flights came from the UK, you’d have thought they might have done a ride share….”
During lock down, certain international sport activities were scheduled to take place.
There was a public outcry in Britain about footballers and their support staff being allowed to bypass the strict no movement laws passed to keep us ‘safe’, apparently.
The minister at the time is on record as saying “we hear the public concern, but these are ‘important’ people”.
When you get that level of superficial justification for people hoofing a ball about the park then you know we are in a totalitarian driven state authority mindset.
You minions can suck it up, that inside right is an ‘important’ person…..
we had the same crap in Aus…theyre sooo special
Better stop f**king flying then mate cos’ you haven’t made the slightest difference in 27 sodding years!!!!!
“Dear BBC, I have an important question to ask. Should I pick up the phone and ask as normal people do, or would you suggest I should fly by private jet to ask my question in person somewhere far away, in a remote part of Egypt for example”?
Which one of these powerful humans is so important that he/she can endanger our species and our planet by polluting our clean air with untold amounts of deadly Carbon Dioxide?
The power of wind …
Ferdinand Magellan … was a Portuguese explorer. He is best known for having planned and led the 1519 Spanish expedition to the East Indies across the Pacific Ocean to open a maritime trade route, during which he discovered the interoceanic passage bearing thereafter his name and achieved the first European navigation from the Atlantic to Asia.

I think I’ll go for a walk before my Zoom meeting.
Flying on a commercial jet to Egypt would have meant a lower carbon footprint, I should think.
One must remember that your status is peasant scum, and do not question your betters.
Emma Thompson British actress flew from LA to London to stir up the crowds in an Extinction Rebellion protest which blocked London for days . She was spotted flying home in a British Airways Jet in an £18,000 per flight personal booth , yet it’s me that’s the problem wanting to heat my modest home and running two highly efficient cars . One Law for the rich and another for the rest.
If the Extinction Rebellion fools had any brains they would be blocking runways…..as obviously they have no idea how much more fuel a typical commercial jet plane uses as compared to a typical private car.
Modern planes are surprisingly fuel efficient some in the region of 90mpg per passenger and all at 450 knots
Reference:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_aircraft#
Thank you Wikipedia!
As they don’t have any brains they would probably try to block the runways as the planes were landing 🙂
COP27 is a joke when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions.
China and India will see to it that CO2 will continue to increase in the Earth’s atmosphere no matter what those at COP27 do.
The plebs just need to wind their necks in and stop criticising their betters. They know what they’re doing, just close your eyes to the hypocrisy and remember your place.
I think I’ve got that right.
So that’s all right then, fly on a private jet and plant a tree to make up for it.
Mmmm, sounds like the media are wanting a slice of this action too.
And then make the tree into pellets and ship it Drax.
The bit you forgot was the fact that SAID TREE WAS GOING TO BE PLANTED ANYWAY.
Just another way to fleece people and provide fig leaves for their hypocrisy.
If there was actually a climate crisis, these same elites could easily use telecommunications programs such as Zoom, Teams, etc to do their work. I attend meetings every day, sometimes several with people all over the US, but I haven’t been on a plane in 20 years.
It’s possible. Companies do it because it saves them money.
Since the elite aren’t spending their own money, they don’t care.
Weren’t the leftists in favor of defunding COPs?
LoL! 🙂
Politicians and journalists important, that’s a new one. Only important in their own minds.
“The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit’s international lead told BBC News”
That would be the same Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit founded by Richard Black after he left the BBC.
You know, the same Richard Black who used to be a BBC Environment correspondent.
The circular propaganda continues on its merry way.
Of course the irony is not lost that we on wattupwiththat are holding our conference emitting no CO2 at all😉 judge by deeds and not words
The Climate Elite also get free passes for their super yachts. That from the EU
Not just elites but also paid protesters on vacations.
Let’s pretend there are no other policy problems to deal with…
UK’s self-billed ‘Scrooge’ promises tax rises, spending cuts – ABC News (go.com)
What else would anyone expect from the BBC? I’m surprised The Guardian hasn’t published an article justifying these private flights as well.
Remember, the term “Jet Set” was reserved for the elite when jet airplanes first started carrying passengers in the late 1950’s. Nothing has changed.
Here in Calgary the news today repeated an item about native groups from the Yukon went to cop27 to talk about how climate change affects them, the woman they interviewed talked about reduced numbers of salmon.
Of course that is likely due to over fishing not CC but of course that’s not a question anyone bothers asking.
What can one say? We point this out every time, every year, when the IPCC have their annual ball in some exotic venue. Each time the BBC and the rest of the MSM make excuses for what is simply a private junket for a private boys (and girls) private club . .
