Verstappen: Status means I 'must' be part of Drive to Survive

Max Verstappen feels he has no choice but to appear in Netflix's Drive to Survive.

Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen believes his status means he 'has to' be part of the Netflix Drive to Survive series. The popular behind-the-scenes look at Grand Prix racing has drawn controversy during its four seasons thus far, with some believing that parts of the drama between drivers is manufactured, when no such thing exists in real life. In season four - which covered Verstappen's 2021 title-winning campaign - the Dutchman boycotted the series and did not give any sit-down interviews to the production team or appear directly on camera, except for wide, general shots or race action. That stance has softened in time for season five - which is set to delve into Verstappen's defence of the title in 2022 and his Red Bull team dethroning Mercedes in the Constructors' Championship after eight years of dominance.

Verstappen "must" appear on Drive to Survive

Drive to Survive has been crucial in allowing F1 to finally crack the American enigma after nearly 70 years of trying, with there set to be three grands prix stateside in 2023, including in Miami and Las Vegas. Verstappen feels it is "important" to keep growing F1 and, after discussions with the production team, is happy to take part once again. "I spoke with them of course before I was going to give an interview," Verstappen told media, including RacingNews365.com. "I hope that they understood my message, and I also know that especially being a World Champion, you have to be part of something like that. "So I gave them like 30 minutes to one hour of an interview and I hope that they are going to use it. "I don't know when I'm going to watch it, but I hope they are happy. "And I hope that I can be happy after watching it - I know it is important to F1 as well for growing the sport in general. Season five of Drive to Survive is set to be released on February 24th, the second of the three-day preseason test in Bahrain.
