GALVA, Ill. — Several high school students were taught the tricks of the trade in public policy and the legislative process by local leaders in a special class on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
Illinois 37th District Senator Win Stoller invited high school students throughout the district to Black Hawk College's east campus in Galva, IL to learn about public policy and the legislative process.
The event, held by Stoller's Youth Advisory Council, saw students learn directly from area leaders, such as Illinois 93rd District State Representative candidate Travis Weaver, who said he enjoyed talking to them.
"There's a lot of options… what was right for your parents or your siblings, isn't necessarily right for you, so it's really important to be self-reflective and think about 'what is it that I want to do?'" Weaver said.
Annawan High School senior Aiden Earley said he liked how they were taught in a bi-partisan manner.
"I really love getting to learn all these different perspectives and getting to learn new things," he said.
Students learned about public service through interactive activities, like a coin toss that taught them how opportunity could land at any time, and a mock committee hearing that decide the fate of potential legislation.
