Getting the Band Back Together

Summary:

After about a year of sneaking around on the sly, Arthur and Eames are finally ready to tell their kids that they're getting back together.

Notes:

This is a sequel to A Tale of Two Fathers (or The Parent Inception). I have a lot more of this story in my head. Let's see if posting this will motivate me to get it out there.

Chapter Text

Forrest:

Forrest is exhausted.

First of all, their travel plans had gotten all messed up and he and his dad ended up getting re-routed on separate flights. Then his other father, who he's allowed to call Eames, because of their unusual circumstances, drove Uncle Kit's rental car to pick him up at an airport two hours away last night while his dad didn't get in until super early this morning in a Taxi. So that was a whole thing.

Plus, he and Hugh were up until, like, two in the morning talking--it's just so much better than on the phone.

So, Forrest is the last one to wake up and apparently missed breakfast.

The hell? How could they do this to him?

Also, his dad has already taken off somewhere, even though Forrest barely remembers even seeing him through bleary eyes when he'd checked in on them really crazy early. And he's apparently taken Hugh with him wherever he's gone off to!

This is supremely annoying, because they were supposed to find a way to get Uncle Kit to take them to the beach and leave their father's at home to hopefully kiss again and then then fall back in love and get remarried and make it so they can all see each other every day, not every couple of months or whatever.

Forrest is picking through the cupboards, looking for something to eat when Eames appears and offers to take him to a cafe instead.

"What if Hugh comes back while I'm gone? We had plans. I don't know why he ditched me," Forrest lets himself pout.

"Hugh was awake hours before you, sleepyhead. You can't expect him to sit around waiting. And I wanted to ask your advice about something, regardless."

"Advice?" Forrest asks, suddenly curious.

It pretty much has to be about that kiss, right? Maybe Forrest is getting enlisted by his father to help win over his dad. That's pretty much his wildest dream coming true. Hugh is going to be so jealous.

They'll have to walk into town, which is a bit of a hike, but Hugh and Dad have the rental car and Kit says he needs the one that belongs to the house for something.

The two grownups share a look that Forrest doesn't understand as they leave.

He likes Uncle Kit a lot. He's cool, without question. But Hugh still doesn't feel totally normal around him like he does with his parents. Forrest doesn't really know any other grownups who don't have kids, except for maybe some of his teachers. It makes him kinda nervous, to be honest, even if Hugh treats Kit like he's his second-best friend, after Forrest, of course. Maybe third-best after Eames.

Eames is unusually quiet on the walk. Forrest thinks his father might be worrying. His dad never worries about anything.

Forrest hasn't seen Eames worry since they first met last summer in London. But it isn't all that shocking to see him acting like he's emotional. He's always crying at the end of their trips together.

Dad says he wears his heart on his sleeve, which is why Forrest knows this thing between his parents can't have been going on for very long. Eames wouldn't have been able to hide it.

When they get to the cafe Forrest needs his father to order for him, because he doesn't speak French like Hugh does, which totally sucks, but whatever.

They sit down and Eames is biting his lip looking like he doesn't know what to say.

It scares Forrest a little bit. What if this isn't about his parents getting back together at all. What if they're going to make changes to how their newfound family works.

"Is ... is everything OK?" he can't help asking.
