Greenpeace Betrays Founders to Peddle Junk Science

by Dr. Patrick Moore

Since 2016, when acoustic sonar surveys required for construction of 1,500 wind turbines began on the U.S. Atlantic coast, 174 Humpback whales have washed ashore dead. This represents a 400 percent increase in mortalities from previous years. And then there are the highly endangered North Atlantic right whales, of which less than 400 individuals exist today. They recovered somewhat after being hunted to near extinction in the 1930’s, but now they are thought to be declining.

Federal government agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are authorizing the sonar surveys. Greenpeace, the organization I helped found in 1971, has sided with the wind turbines over the whales, stating there is no “proof” that sonar is involved in this tragedy. Here is a quote from a Greenpeace spokesperson:

“At this time, due to the lack of evidence suggesting harm from offshore wind development, Greenpeace’s position remains that the best way to protect whales is to create ocean sanctuaries, eliminate single-use plastics at the source, and stop our dependency on oil and gas.”

Perhaps it would be a good idea to put the “ocean sanctuaries” where the whales live.

It is a fact that mortalities among whales in this region are often caused by entanglement in fishnets and by vessel strikes. But a 400 percent increase in whale deaths, coincident with the sonar program, should cause environmentalists like Greenpeace to swing into action and spend some of their hundreds of millions on a thorough research program. Instead, they are doing nothing. Well, they do cruise around in their $30 million yacht which they call a “sailing vessel” even though there is an 1,850-horsepower diesel engine in the hold which provides the main propulsion.

It is understandable that federal agencies like NOAA would downplay the concern for the whales. The Biden administration is dead set on building all these contraptions even though they will be much more expensive and far less reliable than nuclear, hydroelectric, or fossil fuel generators.

Whales are acoustic species that use sonar to see the world around them. They have eyes for close-up recognition, but their sonar is how they navigate and speak to each other.

It is not only the sonar surveys that may pose a real problem for the whales. Depending on their size, each one of the 1,500 turbines will require a concrete base excavated into the ocean sediment up to 150 feet deep and 30-40 feet wide. This will clearly cause a huge amount of mud to be dispersed into the water column. Both these species of whales are of the baleen type. They are filter-feeders using their baleen to strain their food into their stomachs. The mud from these many excavations may interfere with their feeding and may also affect the species they depend on for food.

I sailed variously as navigator, first-mate and leader on all four Greenpeace campaigns to save the whales from 1975-1978. We went into the deep-sea Pacific for months at a time during the whaling season, sometimes 1,000 miles from land. We put ourselves in front of harpoons to protect the fleeing whales. When we arrived in San Francisco in early July 1975 with film footage of a harpoon going over the heads of our crewmembers in a small inflatable boat, and then into a Sperm Whale’s back, the images went around the world in a matter of hours. Greenpeace had arrived as a major player in the global environmental movement.

At the time we intervened in the Pacific whale slaughter, the Russian and Japanese whaling fleets together were killing about 30,000 whales annually. Many species – including blue whales, sei whales, fin whales and right whales – had been slaughtered to commercial extinction. Among the most commercially valuable whales, only the sperm whales, the largest toothed animals ever to exist on Earth, survived in large numbers. But they were certain to be all but wiped out if the hunts continued. The much smaller minke whales, which were never considered optimum by the big fleets, are still present in reasonable numbers.

In 1979, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned the hunting of all species – except minke whales – by factory ships and declared the Indian Ocean a whale sanctuary. In 1982, the IWC adopted an indefinite global moratorium on all commercial whaling. Except for the right whales of the North Atlantic and North Pacific, all whale species are either fully recovered or well along in recovery.

I left Greenpeace when they began to refer to humans as “the enemies of the Earth,” a bit too much like “original sin” for me. To top it off, my fellow directors, none of whom had any formal science education, decided we should campaign to “ban chlorine worldwide.” They nicknamed chlorine “The Devil’s Element,” conveniently dismissing that chlorine is the most important of all the 90-plus naturally occurring elements for public health and medicine. I guess this doesn’t count for those who don’t like humankind.

Today, Greenpeace executives work in cushy offices and sail around like a bunch of college kids on a summer cruise. By siding with machines over living, endangered whales they have betrayed their founders and everyone who really cares about the natural world. Now more than ever, I am glad I left them behind in 1986, after 15 years of service. When it had its priorities right, Greenpeace was made up of voluntary crusaders for peace and nature. It has become a big business focused on fundraising, a backroom racket peddling junk science.

This commentary was first published at Washington Times, February 14, 2023, and can be accessed here.

Patrick Moore, Ph.D., ecology, is a co-founder of Greenpeace and was a director of Greenpeace from 1971 – 1986. He is a director of the CO2 Coalition, Arlington, Virginia, and author of several books, including “Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom,” which debunks scare stories used to instill fear.

I am baffled how a group like, say the Sierra Club, can fight like cats against the Fountain Wind project in northern California, but side with wind developers in south central Wyoming where eagles have flyways for north-south migration.

I learned not to trust “activists”, “enviromentalists”, or folks with a cause any more than government or commercial interests long ago.

I agree.
If someone has a “cause” then he (/she/it/whatever) is not guided by reason.

a “cause”

“I gave up on Judith Curry a while ago. I don’t know what she thinks she’s doing, but it’s not helping the cause, or her professional credibility.”  —Dr. Michael Mann, IPCC Lead Author, disclosed Climategate e-mail, May 30, 2008

Those are excellent observations that put the spotlight on why CAGW activists are driven by emotion and not by logic.

The big-name activist organizations seem blind to what is becoming more and more obvious: Fossil fuel energy and nuclear power are turning out to have far less overall impact on nature than the “renewables.” And far greater contribution to human betterment in the form of reliable electricity and ample supplies of energy-dense fuel.

At one point, the Royal Society for Protection of Birds (RSPB) in UK campaigned strongly against wind turbines, because of all the birds & bats being killed …
… then they realised how much money they could get from hosting such things on their land & suddenly the bird choppers were the best things since sliced bread ( so we cancelled our membership).

As always it’s all about the money !!

The RSPB enjoys royal patronage….the chief local advocate, HRH King Charles is all for the Great Reset so desperately desired by the WEF.
I am sure his concern for the hundreds and hundreds of raptors, slaughtered every year on the wing tips of our Wind Turbines never affects his support for the RSPB or the WEF.
What more needs to be said.

It amazes me that people such as Mr. Guy-Johnson so protect themselves from reality by only watching the leftist MSM and websites, that they can even ask such a question.

BTW, I am sure that the leftist MSM DID show the clip and congratulated the prince, at the time, for his noble beliefs.

So do you have such a short memory, or are you just ignorant due to failure to keep current even with the leftist MSM?

Environmentalism and conservationism were essentially synonymous when peopled by classical liberal types of Dr. Moore’s stripe.
The former is now the province of strutting narcissists, sociopathic tyrants, and other shades of political and economic opportunists.

Thank you, Dr. Moore!
I really enjoyed your last book , and I hope you will have a chance to write another! If so, please omit any quotes from President Trump on the back cover, as the sight of his name seems to cause frothing of the mouth and serious irrational behavior in a sizable minority! I hope you will expand on your theory of CO2 depletion being caused by oceanic organisms, and provide the scientific graphs and proofs that even a child or a climate alarmist can understand!
The thought of Greenpeace contenancing the killing of whales makes me sick to my stomach! Just as the Audubon Society ignores the slaughter of endangered raptors, Greenpeace has betrayed their fundamental principles to push unreliable wind energy on a gullible public! The only REAL environmentalists seem to be in the climate realism camp, with support for smart fossil fuel use, modern nuclear development and the wise harvesting of our forests!

I clearly remember Greenpieces vociferously attacking US Navy because sonar was harming whales, dolphins and porpoises. Now that they are personally profiting from the wind and solar scams they don’t give a shit about them. Ain’t that special?

There is some controversy when Dr Patrick Moore says he was a co-founder of Green Peace, in fact I let myself get sucked into an online argument about Dr Patrick Moore’s credibility on another website. The problem is is that if you Google I only find Green Peace’s version of events.

As Greenpeace was founded in Canada in 1971 and Dr Moore is Canadian and was involved in the earliest activities then there’s little doubt in my mind that, at the very least, he’s a founding member of Greenpeace. Even Wikipedia says he was a past President of Greenpeace

Their suspicions were confirmed in 2000, after more than a dozen whales from four different species were found beached and dying in the Bahamas—an event that a government-led investigation ultimately tied to U.S. naval sonar training.”

Post says:”… no “proof” that sonar is involved…”

If sonar is not suspect here why did Navy agree to restrict use of sonar in a 2015 law suit.

From Yellowstone tv show:

John Dutton: What do they do with the sagebrush when they put in the solar panels?
Stanley: They, they, they would clear it before putting in the solar panels.
John Dutton: And remove the sagebrush?
Stanley: Yes sir.
John Dutton: Sage Grouse live in the sagebrush.
Stanley: They do.
John Dutton: And you don’t think removing the sagebrush is gonna have an effect on the population?
Stanley: I just said there’s no evidence…
John Dutton: You know what scares me about you, Stanley? You’re serious.

Of course the “climate” crusaders are the ones who decide what studies to fund, and soundings/whale deaths is a study they will never fund.

First day in office of next Republican president, Executive orders requiring ALL “climate science” study funding to be for birds killed by wind mills, damage to the “environment” by solar installations and whales killed by offshore wind siting studies, installation and operation. Also infrasound due to existing windmills with a similar determination as the “cancer” studies that determine ANY trace amount of whatever causes cancer, meaning ANY sound reaching a human’s body is TOO MUCH.

Just a start.

Sorry, that is complete bullshit. The same LNT (Linear No Threshold) nonsense used to demonise Nuclear Energy and make Nuclear as expensive as possible. In fact, whilst high radiation levels certainly damage and kill, there is plenty of evidence that low levels are beneficial to health!

Thirty or more years ago I worked for the US Navy on environmental matters. One of the issues addressed at the time was the use of Navy enemy-detection sonars in certain portions of the ocean where whales fed, nursed or transited and were believed to be killed or harmed by sonar pulses. The problem was researched and subsequently clearly established as caused by Navy sonars. Rules were established that, absent clear enemy threats, sonar signals would not be transmitted in certain ocean areas and times. I do not know whether the Navy still follows these rules, however, based on a 2005 Scientific American article (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/does-military-sonar-kill/) apparently not. It is incredibly ignorant for Greenpeace to suggest that sonar is not a problem for whales. A simple 10 second web search easily reveals that it is and has been known for decades.

The birdbrains mincing bats and raptors with windmill blades are enough to drive anybody batty.

Has anyone else noticed that windmills on mountaintops are being sold as the Wave of the Future, the way smokestacks in river valleys were sold as the Wave of the Future 200 years ago?

Smokestacks are now sinful, and windmills are now virtuous. Sin and virtue are subject to the vagaries of fashion, it seems. Or as the French — who know something about fashion— say, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

The German Greens have always been qixotic. Back in the 1980s-90s it was Greenpeace International’s policy that nuclear waste should be dealt with in its country of origin. Germany sent spent nuclear fuel by rail to France for reprocessing at Le Havre. The German greens were quite happy to let the trains go to Le Havre but they continually tried to block the trains returning with the waste products.

The headline “Greenpeace Betrays Founders” is part false by saying “founders” in plural form, because the author of this article is the only Greenpeace founder who defected from Greenpeace and disagrees with what Greenpeace has been doing since he defected.
