Children Die When ‘Eco-Lies’ Disrupt the War Against Mosquitoes

Vijay Jayaraj

I am glad to be alive after a bout with dengue fever. But many across the world are not so fortunate. More than 4000 die each year due to dengue, a severe mosquito-borne disease.

It all began 10 days ago with intense fever. My body consistently clocked above 102 degrees Fahrenheit for 48 hours. Then followed severe pain in every part of the body. Once the fever and aching subsided, the second phase of the struggle began, with the blood platelet count falling dramatically.

Often, as in my case, the blood platelet count recovers on its own slowly. But in case of mismanagement, as the World Health Organization (WHO) reports, some people develop “complications associated with severe bleeding, organ impairment and/or plasma leakage.” In the worst cases, it results in death.

Contrary to expectation, the prevalence and incidence of cengue has increased in recent decades.

WHO says, “the number of dengue cases reported to WHO increased over 8 fold over the last two decades, from 505,430 cases in 2000, to over 2.4 million in 2010, and 5.2 million in 2019. Reported deaths between the year 2000 and 2015 increased from 960 to 4032, affecting mostly younger age group.”

“Before 1970,” the report went on, “only 9 countries had experienced severe dengue epidemics. The disease is now endemic in more than 100 countries in the WHO regions of Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia and the Western Pacific.”

Why is there a dramatic increase when we have effective disease control mechanisms at our disposal? Because the application of those solutions has been hindered by environmental movements.

The increase in dengue can partially be attributed to radical environmentalists’ opposition to the most effective killer of mosquitoes, DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane). The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary vector (carrier) of dengue. As per WHO, the mosquito is now “well adapted to urban habitats and breeds mostly in man-made containers/spaces.”  DDT remains one of the most effective deterrents of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Thanks to Rachel Carson’s unscientific claims about DDT in her 1962 book Silent Spring, the environmental movement against DDT began with blind stupidity. In 1972, the U.S. EPA banned DDT. Then in 2004, several countries decided to ban DDT at the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Today, most arguments (and movements) against DDT can be traced back to the inspiration from this fallacious fear-mongering unscientific book and its claims on DDT.

Not only were Carson’s claims untrue, but they have also managed to cause the deaths of thousands across the globe during the last three decades by acting as an active ideological hurdle to employing DDT to kill the deadly mosquitoes.

Some cities in India for example are influenced by the lies from her book and fail to proactively fumigate public places with DDT. Instead of using DDT as a preventive method, DDT fumigation is limited to a responsive measure, fumigating only when dengue cases occur.

And so far, we have addressed only dengue. The benefits of DDT fumigation appear far more critical if we are to consider their role in prevention of Malaria. Malaria affects 300 million people every year. The situation is far worse in the African continent, where malaria kills two children every minute. DDT can prevent the transmission of malaria by as much as 90% if employed efficiently.

I am thankful that I have recovered, and I am thankful that our government in India has not banned DDT. In fact, India is supplying DDT to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia for malaria control.

DDT is a life saver, and any country with mosquito-borne diseases should allow its use. Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Muller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1948 “for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods,” including mosquitoes. Let not the lies of Rachel Carson rob millions of African children of their very lives.

Rachel Carlson and Karl Marx to two greatest mass killers in the history of the world. Funny how both are heroes of the left, yet two other great heroes of the left Mao and Stalin are amateurs when it comes to killing our fellow humans, Mao and Stalin on have a little over a hundred million at “best” one hundred and fifty billion. Carlson and Maxs by this time are at least three quarters or a billion to a billion by now.

When the billions start dying of famine Greta Thunberg and her puppet masters can join the ranks of the mass slaughterers., although Greta can claim immunity as she was a minor at the time of her offences, and she was merely a n accomplice. Those behind her have no such defence

The minimum age for criminal responsibility in Sweden is 15 years of age. There are three limits for imprisonment of a young person. A person should not be imprisoned before 21 years of age. Concerning very serious crimes it is possible to imprison a person who is between 18 and 21.

The only true, logical, reason for banning DDT is to reduce the population as devised and implemented by the progressive Geopolitical “Scientists”. Period. They are now doing the same thing with “Climate Change”, Global Warming, whatever it is called this year.

Thanks for the link. I’ve read many times that Carlson’s claims are contrary to evidence, but have never taken the time to dig into the issue myself. This JunkScience article seems like a good start.

If anyone has other suggestions for an objective look at Silent Spring I’d appreciate the link.

Cato Institute published “Silent Spring at 50” in 2012. Its well written, with ~40 pages of notes & references. Each chapter reviews a section of Carlson’s book showing the state of science at the time and how most of what she claimed turned out mistaken. Well, mistaken is probably not correct: the number of lies by omission or comission are too frequent.

Thank you for the link. I plowed my way through the article and realized that what I have suspected for many years is more than likely true. The evidence seems to point to the environmentalists and the EPA, WHO, etc. are flat out lying to the world. Nothing scientific about it, they are just totally ignoring the preponderance of actual evidence in favor of DDT being a boon to mankind.
Reminds me of the recent developments regarding the kung flu, where all the evidence points to simple inexpensive treatments being effective, but refuted in favor of pharma reaping huge profits in producing vaxxes which don’t work and are, more than likely, harmful to humans.
Not wanting to sound partisan here, but Trump was right in proposing using simple readily available and cheap remedies to fight the viruses which were unleashed upon the world via some nefarious players upon the world stage.
“Trust the science” has become a joke. A sick joke, and deadly these days, for some. All the agencies have become arms of the leftists and their cohorts in a mass crime of epic proportions. Seems like they are all vying for the top spot of mass murderers of the human race(notice correct usage of the word “race”), trust none of them to follow the science. They seem to only trust the financial and power they can gather from their actions. It has become abundantly clear, for me, that the medical community no longer lives up to their oath to do no harm.
Apologize for the rant and long winded comment.
May God help us all.

Thanks too. The link is not to the general list, but to the one question I have always had about egg shell thinning; most of the complaints about banning DDT only complain about the costs of the ban, ignoring any benefits, and the main benefit I have always heard is saving so many birds because their eggs were too thin.

The problem is that the data in support of egg thinning was completely fabricated.
The chickens in the test were kept in a hot, noisy envronment and fed a calcium poor diet. All things known to cause shell thinning.
They were also fed massive amounts of DDT, thousands of times greater than could ever be consumed in the wild.

Lo and behold, the chickens had thin shelled eggs, and the conclusion was DDT must have caused it.

The increase in the number of eagles and other raptors was due to the hunting bans. The hunting bans were put in place several years prior to the DDT bans, and the increases in raptor numbers also started several years prior to the DDT bans.

Hunting for raptors ended long before the 1960s.
Farmers with cause could shoot a particularly prolific bird eater, but that was it, but they need formal permission from a game warden before shooting the raptor.

1920-1940, starting with the Migratory Bird Act, migratory birds were protected. During this time, eagles and other raptors were added to the act.

What helped bring back raptors was US Fish & Wildlife Service ending their anti-coyote and anti-wolf poison meat on wooden stakes effort.

Wind farms are reversing these gains.

but to the one question I have always had about egg shell thinning”

Except some of the ‘experts’ who claimed that they couldn’t handle raptor eggs because they were too thin, later admitted that they broke hawk and eagle eggs on purpose.

At the same time when eco-alarmists were raging about thin eggshells, it wasn’t unusual to find whole eggs dumped out of bird nests by cuckoos. Eggs that fell more than 20 feet to the forest floor, apparently undamaged.

The same case frequently occurs when storms dump a nest to the ground. Though, less eggs survive that fall.

No benefits to a DDT ban.

Substantial populations were deloused using DDT during WWII and Korean War.

No identified illnesses or side effects, during decades of use.

I grew up in a place called Levittown.
A large part of Levittown was built on swamp. Levittown dirt was great for gardening, except if you dug down as little as two feet to a few feet, you would hit water.

I remember when the mosquitos corps came through with people hunting down every puddle and stagnant water. They usually threw round balls that fizzed and spun DDT throughout a puddle. Ponds and lakes received larger amounts.

Every summer for years, jeeps drove around town spraying a fog of DDT behind as they sprayed for mosquitos.
Again, no side effects.

Carson and others alleged DDT harmed nature, without evidence. The head of the EPA, William D. Ruckelshaus, banned DDT.

When people claim that eagles and other raptors are only slowly returning, they forget to mention that US FWS (US, Fish and Wildlife Services) set poison traps across the West, Midwest and parts of the East to kill coyotes and wolves.

Nowadays, wind mills are eliminating raptor recovery and eco-alarmists don’t care.

Home use is not totally useless. IIRC DDT also works as a spatial repellent meaning if sprayed on surfaces or in impregnated bed-nets the mosquitos don’t like to even land on it. Sort of a last line of defense.
Now if the population had reliable electricity they could have A/C and close the windows! But that is another topic [which I bet Carlson would also have be on the wrong side of].

According to my Merck Index which is out of date but fundamentally correct, except they keep claiming that it could be a carcinogen, it is listed as a contact insecticide, ectoparasiticide and peducluicide. Human toxicity is death at estimated 500mg/kg. Problem is often the carrier, kerosene makes it more toxic, which it is to some organisms, carrier could itself smother organisms which I suspect was common in its beginning use. Also it is a very stable compound difficult to eradicate, insoluble in water. Fundamental principle in toxicology is dependence on dosage, known for centuries.

I had a dose of dengue while working in Rabaul New Guinea. I was there for first self government then independence. At precisely this time the money paying for 6 monthly DDT spraying was diverted to some other use, & mosquitos took over the place.

DDT not only kills mosquitos, but is also a major irritant to them. When sprayed in a building the mosquitos stay away for about 6 months. We would get a notice that our home or work place was going to be sprayed AM or PM on a specific date. It was advised to stay out for a few hours. Under this program insects were never a problem, houses did not even have screens. After it stopped it became an undesirable place to live.

It’s complicated.

From Wikipedia …

DDT was never banned for anti-malarial use, and its ban for agricultural use in the United States in 1972 did not apply outside the U.S. nor to anti-malaria spraying. The international treaty that banned most uses of DDT and other organochlorine pesticides—the 2001 Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (which became effective in 2004)—included an exemption for the use of DDT for malaria control until affordable substitutes could be found. Mass outdoor spraying of DDT was abandoned in poor countries subject to malaria, such as Sri Lanka, in the 1970s and 1980s; this was not because of government prohibitions but because the DDT had lost its ability to kill the mosquitoes. Because of insects’ very short breeding cycle and large number of offspring, the most resistant insects survive and pass on their genetic traits to their offspring, which replace the pesticide-slain insects relatively rapidly. Agricultural spraying of pesticides produces pesticide resistance in seven to ten years.

Some experts have said that restrictions placed on the agricultural use of DDT have increased its effectiveness for malaria control. According to pro-DDT advocate Amir Attaran, the result of the (activated in 2004) Stockholm Convention banning DDT’s use in agriculture “is arguably better than the status quo … For the first time, there is now an insecticide which is restricted to vector control only, meaning that the selection of resistant mosquitoes will be slower than before.”

While it is certain that the DDT question is complex, as it works against arthropods which includes crustaceans, I would like to see the evidence about mosquito ranges. I worked in Louisiana low salinity marshes for decades. Despite extensive burning for other reasons, there was no way your recommendations could successfully work in such areas. Other marshes and swamps are similar, and there was evidence that hordes of mosquitoes could be blown large distances. Hard to tag they are, impossible to drain in large areas with high rainfall. Structures in our marsh had small screened entry porches with DDT used there successfully.

DDT Ban Takes Effect[EPA press release – December 31, 1972]
The general use of the pesticide DDT will no longer be legal in the United States after today, ending nearly three decades of application during which time the once-popular chemical was used to control insect pests on crop and forest lands, around homes and gardens, and for industrial and commercial purposes.

( … ) Public health, quarantine, and a few minor crop uses were excepted, as well as export of the material.

Birds and bats provide a natural way of keeping mosquito and other problem insects
Birds and bats are being killed at an astonishingly increasing rate as the number of industrial wind turbines increase.
Twice as many bats are killed by wind turbines as birds because of barotrauma – just flying near a wind turbine blade cause death to bats.
Worldwide, bats play essential roles in keeping populations of night-flying insects in balance. Just one bat can eat large numbers of insects, and large colonies catch tons of insects nightly, including beetle and moth species that cost American farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually, not to mention mosquitoes in our backyards.
Bats are the primary natural defense in keeping mosquito populations in check. Mosquito populations have increased 10 fold in several states over the last 40 years. This population increase in mosquitoes was also coincident with the millions of bats that have been killed by industrial wind turbines since the year 2000.

Birds and bats are being killed at an astonishingly increasing rate as the number of industrial wind turbines increase.

We criticize Global Warming claimants for not supporting their claims with links to authoritative publications. We should hold people posting pictures of “BirdChoppers” to the same standard.

“Birds and bats are being killed at an astonishingly increasing rate as the number of industrial wind turbines increase.”
Please provide a link to an authority on this statistic.

There are other, possibly better, ways to selectively combat mosquitos …

Local governments and mosquito control programs often use integrated mosquito management (IMM), also called integrated pest management or integrated vector management.

IMM uses a combination of methods to control mosquitoes based on an understanding of mosquito biology and the mosquito life cycle. IMM uses methods that, when followed correctly, are safe and scientifically proven to reduce numbers of mosquitoes. Everyone can help control mosquitoes.

I worked with Merlin Tuttle in documenting the slaughter of bats by industrial wind turbines.
Merlin is the premier expert on bats. Here’s an article by Merlin. https://www.merlintuttle.org/wind-energy-resources/

I’ll post a complete list of links verifying my assertions tomorrow.

My, my, my. Really? Are we really surprised when the leftist’s claims are debunked when the light of fact is shone upon the faulty reasoning behind the claims? No.
I just assume(bad me) that whatever the left is proclaiming at the time is more of their attempts to influence folks to follow their cult-like ideology. This is no different, DDT bad ban it, than anything else they shout from wherever they get a platform. Its all garbage.

There are now multiple genetically modified mosquito technologies that could be implemented with greater success than DDT.

Maybe environmentalist and anti-GMO activists could put the lives of poor people in developing countries ahead of their empty virtue signaling and apply these options.

They assume only some species of mosquitoes carry diseases and blame climate change on the spread of these mosquitoes but what if we’ve underestimated the mosquitoes ability to spread irrespective of climate (they spread because they can, not because it’s warmer)?
We’ve noticed trends but 10% survival in colder climates vs warmer could still be enough for them to be a problem. Are they adapting to colder climates to move away from origin?
What if the cold climate mosquitos start carrying the diseases the others have?
They survive in Alaska & places with low average temperatures (don’t bite all year but enough to be a major problem for months).

Alaska harbors 35 mosquito species, and a University of Alaska Fairbanks professor estimates more than 17 trillion mosquitoes hatch in Alaska every year!

So it may not be just the tropics eg. some USA states. They appear to be very adaptable to different climates, cities & remote.

Unsaid here, but nonetheless promoted by articles like this one is the meme that shifts in the mosquito population/species would be related to global warming alone.

It is more complicated than that.

“Until the mid-1980s, waste tires were considered more of a nuisance and environmental threat than the possible foci of mosquito-borne disease epidemics. This changed in 1985 when a substantial breeding population of Aedes albopictus was discovered in Houston, Texas [..]The Asian tiger mosquito transmits dengue fever[..]”

People dying aren’t a bug in the environmental movement, they are a feature. The modern environmental movement is anti-human. They would love to see the world’s population reduced 97%. In my research for a paper I did for English comp in the ’90s I discovered that they believe the optimum human population is 200 million.

I’m glad you recovered Vijay, I enjoy your work. What else do we expect from the environmental movement but lies and a complete lack of ownership and responsibility when the lies are caught out..

Very nice article. About DDT killing, but also, we must know it repels exceptionally well too.

I have an old bottle of 99% DDT, “deep woods” repellent. I only use it camping in MN or WI during family lake house vacations.

I have always attracted mosquitos more than most, and with just a tiny amount of this pure magic on the back of my neck, and a few dabs on limbs and on my shirt I get zero bites. Other people use their crappy new stuff and they get bit.

Just sayin’

July 16, 2022 9:19 am

DDT is banned for mosquito control only in about two dozen countries, most of which don’t have malaria problems or high incidence of dengue.

Not just Silent Spring, DDT and other DDT era pesticides are accused of causing the so called “polio” epidemic, that is: the cases of vaguely defined neurological issues – not laboratory tested polio.

Polio is a BS word!

You would think the Clinton and Gates foundations would have thoroughly researched the DDT option if they really wanted to save people from these diseases.
