Carlos Sainz had to settle for eighth place at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, after a botched pitstop from Ferrari cost the Spaniard a podium. Midway through the race Ferrari elected to pit Sainz to react to Red Bull and Mercedes, however the team were not ready with his tyres when he chose to come in. Ferrari Team Principle Mattia Binotto says the call for the pit stop came too late, which is why Sainz was left stranded in the box and ultimately losing out to a shot at the podium. "This is one of the easiest things to solve. However, these kinds of things should not happen, but I am convinced that we can be stronger in the future," Binotto told Sky Sports . "I am more concerned about the pace this weekend than about those mistakes."
Ferrari lacked pace to win
Despite Ferrari appearing to lead the way in practice and challenging for pole in qualifying, Binotto believes they simply didn't have the pace to keep up with Mercedes or Red Bull. "The fact is we weren't fast enough today," he admitted. "If you look at the speed in qualifying, we would have hoped for a better result there. However, the speed and performance of the car were not good. "We hoped for a better result in the race, but the performance was not good on the longer runs, especially not on the medium and on the hard tyre." Binotto says the team has been disappointed with the past few races, where their pace deficit has been significant during the races. He added: "It's been like this for three races in a row. Hungary, Spa and now here. We are not getting the most out of the car and there is clearly something going wrong that we have to fix." The team currently sit second in the F1 Constructors championship, but Mercedes are now just 30 points off them.
