Game Recap: Softball |

Miller cranks three home runs in split

ALBION – Kearney Miller smacked three home runs on the day, helping the Albion College softball team split with Kalamazoo College. The junior drove in six runs on the day and walked twice for the Brits.

GAME ONE: Albion 4 Kalamazoo 3

The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the third before Miller launched her first of three long balls on the afternoon. Jacqueline Jozefczyk worked a one-out walk before scoring on Miller's no doubt home run to left center, vaulting Albion ahead 2-1 through three.

Kalamazoo tied the game in the fourth before the Brits regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Kiersten Wilkin – who was marvelous on defense – led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a bunt single from Emma Schramm. Jozefczyk followed with a single up the middle to load the bases.

Senior Courtney Ellis put together a veteran at bat, drawing a walk and allowing Wilkin to cross. Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to left, driving home Schramm for a 4-2 lead. A Kalamazoo threat was quickly ended in the seventh when Ellis snagged a line drive and Schramm made a great play going into shallow left.

Freshman Lilly Zaskowski (9-6) went the distance, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven, walking only one hitter.

GAME TWO: Kalamazoo 9 Albion 6

In a back and forth slugfest, Miller got Albion on the board first with a two-run home run in the first inning of game two. Zaskowski followed with a double to right center and scored two batters later on a sac fly off the bat of Wilkin.

Kalamazoo scored a run in the bottom of the first and grabbed a 4-3 lead in the second inning, thanks to a bases clearing triple. Trailing 5-3 in the fourth, Rachel Horecki lined a two-out single to left and stole second. She later scored on a Jozefczyk single to cut the deficit to one.

The Hornets responded with a run in the bottom of the inning before Albion tied the game in the fifth. Miller sent the first pitch of the inning over the left field fence for her third home run of the day. Albion later scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game, but Kalamazoo went on to score three unanswered to take game two.

The Britons welcome The University of Olivet on Saturday for Senior Day. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. with the senior festivities to occur postgame.
