I call them the Union of Confused Pseudo-scientists.
A downfall of organizational effectiveness – long term, certain social skills elevate people to the top of organizations, but the same social skills indicate analytical skills “imperfectly”.
Thus democracy’s need for a written and generally accessible constitution.
Point of the tangent: UCS would not be unique or unusual if it has lost its way.
UCS was either:
doomed to fight its founders’ possibly coherent but definitely era-specific thinking into the future until the ideas lost social relevance or,
doomed to be coopted by strong personalities from an era its founders don’t come from… eventually the founders won’t agree with them.
I think UCS started as an anti-nuke group, which would put them at odds with obvious solutions to the next era’s “concerns”.
The so called Union of Concerned Scientists has always been a leftist agi-prop group. They were formed to provide a forum for activists to complain that the US was still opposing the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union collapsed, they had to find a new reason for opposing the US and the west in general, and they found it, in environmentalism in general and global warming in particular.
PS: The vast majority of people who belong to it were never scientists. Anthony Watts once registered his dog with them.
Every union is a communist tool. That is simply the nature of a union. They are there to extract more power, as a collective, than an individual can. This includes all political parties. Even parties of the right embrace the communist way.

I am in Lake Tahoe now and close to our house is a park were they thinned and will be doing prescribed burns. Amazing California is doing something that makes sense. I also remember reading an article about the increase of fire strength which coincided with human fire suppression efforts around the 1930s. I think it was a different article than this, but amusing here because it is NPR and the interviewer really wants the professor to say it is all Climate Change.

ABATZOGLOU: So my take is that these fires burning in California are not particularly emblematic of climate change.
I love the very first line in jimviola’s first link: “KELLY MCEVERS, HOST: Climate change doesn’t cause any particular natural disaster, but it can make them worse.”
In Australia there are many calls for more prescribed burns following recent failures to do so that caused similar bad fires.
These failures were invariably due to the “cool” burns not being carried out because of the backside-covering by the people in charge.
Even my local “indigenous” cool burners [Fire Sticks] were also too afraid of burning for the same reason.
A decade ago it was never a problem.
The more bureaucracy takes charge, the less happens.
Arsonists are the only solution, if only they would consult before igniting.

What does the entire academic world have in common when it comes to discussing global warming causing climate change? They are all collectively blind to the temperatures discussed. Engineering and building professionals calculate or measure temperature. As an electrical professional and building engineering professional specific to GHG emission, we calculate for it but are literally blind. Our visible spectrum doesn’t see heat until it is glowing red hot.
Regional Climatic Data in Building Code provides the design criteria for buildings and their energy use. Unfortunately buildings are signed off as compliant with Building Code. Regional Climatic Data is precise engineering but warns of solar radiation being more significant. Building Inspectors are blind to temperature. Why are buildings white washed? They reflect solar radiation versus absorption.
I am a thermal radiation consultant with a 44 year risk management background in bringing that invisible to light. Thermal Radiation is the natural frequencies and vibration of ALL matter above Absolute Zero(-496 deg. F or -273 deg. C) Hot excited energy always transfers to cold and we do NOT want to heat the atmosphere or you get climate change.
The above criteria is important or you would not get insurance, mortgages, occupancy or be allowed to build. Our Building Code states all new and existing buildings MUST comply with Building Code. Our team imaged buildings in 7 Canadian provinces and 21 states specific to the above criteria.
How many people do you know that use AC or air conditioning? Did you know that AC is in fact refrigeration wasting 1000s of watts per hour per building or unit reacting to symptoms? It was alarming to see solar exposed exteriors with dark surfaces generating heat close to boiling temperature. Some buildings were as hot as 90 deg. C(190 deg. F) That generated heat transfers inside the building and radiates atmospherically “superheating” the atmosphere. Trees and vegetation shading the building were the same temperature as atmospheric temperature(not heating the atmosphere)
For those reading this and having doubts, take the wife and family in bathing suits or shorts to sit or lay on the roof. They will require an ambulance. How many on this read are tradespeople and you know what I am talking about?
I am going to include imaging including time lapsed infrared videos. As far as accuracy we were within 1/10th of a deg. C with an independent consulting challenging this. Our work has also included forest fires and tracking the direction of the fire through the smoke. On August 21, 2003 after being told to stand down we initiated one of the largest evacuations in Canadian history(15,000) and another 15,000 on August 22. I understand this is a lot to post, it is important for professionals as well as consumers.
