Here is a summer assignment for Illinois lawmakers: work on a plan to address the state’s pension problems.

State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit Thursday unveiled a proposal which she says would help.

“It has several different measures that will shore up our Tier Two shortfalls and ensures that our employees will have the pensions they deserve,” said State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego), the chairwoman of the House Personnel and Pensions Committee. “We’re all here serving the state of Illinois, so those individuals would then be eligible for the State Employees’ Retirement System, just like everybody else.”

State Rep. Steve Reick (R-Woodstock), the top Republican on that committee, is on board and urged lawmakers to study the legislation whether they like it or not.

Kifowit and Reick hope the bill will be ready for debate during the fall veto session.
