"I will of course continue to support my friend the Prime Minister and the people of Bromsgrove in any way I can." But Rishi Sunak can count on Mr Johnson standing again.

Mr Johnson, who has been on the backbenches since departing No 10, will run for re-election in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency at the next poll, expected to be held in 2024. His decision to seek re-election comes amid a steady stream of Tory MPs saying they will stand down.

The party is braced for a growing exodus as opinion polls suggest the Conservatives are facing an almighty challenge to recover their popularity.
