Georgia Tech Flies Past Louisville 10-4 to Even Series

Georgia Tech snaps three game losing streak by beating Louisville 10-4

After losing their second straight game on the final hit, Georgia Tech looked to snap their three-game losing skid and even the series with Louisville, one of the best teams in the ACC.

Last night, the Cardinals led the game 5-0 heading into the sixth inning, but Georgia Tech's offense got going and retook the lead 7-5. Unfortunately for GT, errors and a poor performance from Terry Busse let Louisville score three runs in the final few innings to win the game.

Today, Luke Schmolke was on the mound for Georgia Tech, and here was the lineup they went with:

1. CF- Jake DeLeo

2. IF- Angelo Dispigna

3. 3B- Drew Compton

4. C- Jack Rubenstein

5. RF- Stephen Reid

6. 1B- Jackson Finley

7. DH-Kristian Campbell

8. 2B- Nicholas Romano

9. SS- Jadyn Jackson

Both teams went down quickly in the first and after a slow start yesterday, Georgia Tech got on the board in the 2nd.

Reid hit a leadoff home run to get Tech on the board 1-0 and that was huge for Reid. He has struggled in the last few games and it had to be great for him to see that kind of hit.

Finley followed the home run with a double and then Campbell had an RBI single to extend the Yellow Jackets' lead to 2-0.

It was another great inning for Schmolke in the second, as he added two more strikeouts and did not allow a baserunner. It was a fantastic start for the Tech pitcher, who has had his fair share of struggles this season.

Compton flew out to start the 3rd inning, but back-to-back singles from Rubenstein and Reid put runners on the corners with one out. Finley came up to bat and smashed a huge three-run home to take a 5-0 lead.

Schmolke was back for the third inning and although it was not his best inning, it could have been worse. A leadoff triple gave Louisville an early baserunner and then Louisville scored on a ground out to make it 5-1. Schmolke got through the rest of the inning with no runs allowed and Georgia Tech looked to add to its lead in the 4th.

DeLeo and Dispigna led things off with back-to-back singles and Georgia Tech would get the bases loaded after Rubenstein was hit by a pitch. Reid would ground into a double play though and that was it for the Yellow Jackets in the 4th.

Schmolke gave up two singles but got two ground outs and a strikeout to maintain the 5-1 lead for Tech heading to the 5th.

Tech got another home run in the game courtesy of Romano to make the lead 6-1. The Yellow Jackets were in control heading to the bottom of the 5th.

Things got a little shaky for Georgia Tech there.

Louisville had a fly out and then the runner reached on another error from Tech. An RBI triple cut the lead to 6-2. The Cardinals scored a run on a ground out to make it 6-3 and then back-to-back singles gave UL runners on first and second and then an RBI single cut the lead to 6-4.

Schmolke's day was done after that. Cody Carwile came in to replace him. After loading the bases with a walk, it looked like Louisville was about to tie or take the lead. Carwil struck out the last batter to go to the 6th, but things were starting to feel uncomfortable for Tech.

A scoreless sixth inning followed for both teams. The final three innings were shaping up to be pivotal for this game, much like yesterday.

Both teams pitched well in the 7th and 8th innings and the game remained 6-4 heading into the final inning and that is where Georgia Tech put the game away.

After Reid walked, he was replaced by Parker Brosius as a pinch runner. He got to second on a wild pitch and then Campbell was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. A 2-RBI single from Romano pushed the lead to 8-4 and then Jackson got an RBI single of his own to make it 9-4. DeLeo topped the inning off with a sac fly to make it 10-4 and Georgia Tech had a six-run lead heading to the bottom of the 9th.

A good sight to see in the 9th inning was the return of Camron Hill on the mound. He made easy work of the Louisville offense and Georgia Tech won the game 10-4.

Finley and Romano finished the game with three RBIs each and both Schmolke and Carwile had good days on the mound.

The win makes Georgia Tech 14-5 this season and 3-2 in the ACC.

The concluding game of the series will be tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
