ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C.— The William & Mary men's golf team wrapped up their 2023-24 season on Tuesday afternoon with the final round of the 2024 CAA Men's Golf Championships. The Tribe finished in eighth place with a team score of 25-over 889 (294-294-301) at Dataw Island's Cotton Dike Course.
Charleston took the team championship at 35-under-par thanks to a scorching round of 272 on the final day. The Cougars erased a four-shot deficit to Elon over the final round to cruise to a seven-shot win. Charleston's Zach Reuland and Kier van Wyk shared co-medalist honors at 13-under.
Logan Hunter was the top finisher for the Tribe, moving up five spots to 26
th on Tuesday with an even-par 72. Hunter played the back-nine in four-under 32 for the final round and finished with 14 total birdies over the 54 holes. He posted scores of 74-74-72 for a 4-over total.
Freshman
Luke Walmet finished out his CAA Championships debut with a 74 in Tuesday's final round to secure a tie for 32
nd. Walmet kept a relatively clean card for most of the day with a pair of birdies and just three blemishes over the final 18 holes. He finished with a 7-over total of 223 for the event.
Fellow freshman
Preston Burton and
Charlie Bundy were just one shot behind Walmet, at 8-over 224. Burton, despite a 79 in Tuesday's final round, completed his freshman season with a 73.82 scoring average, the second-best scoring average for a rookie in William & Mary program history. He posted scores of 73-72-79 at Dataw Island this week.
Bundy, a sophomore, put up a 76 in round three after scores of 73 and 75 in the first two rounds. He finished the week with the second most pars in the field over the 54-holes, racking up 39.
The Tribe lineup was rounded out by
Scott Hanna who fired scores of 74-78-83 and finished in 46
th.
