The app stores have other comics apps, too, and many online bookstores sell digitized comics and manga along with regular e-books if you want to buy issues without subscribing.

For some, digital versions of magazines and comics may not bring the same joy as a printed copy. But reading on a tablet does have advantages:

• ComiXology and other apps offer a “guided view” feature for displaying a page panel by panel. You can add animated transitions to the comic’s panels. Visit the app’s settings to enable these features.

• And as with apps for digitized magazines, you can zoom in, scroll and jump around through the issue.

Other bonuses? Less clutter around the house and less wasted paper.
