Correction:

Earlier today, we issued a story with the headline “Apple’s new custom emoji come with climate costs.” The story was incorrect, as the emoji are generated locally. We’ve removed the story and regret making the error.

Sonos says TV Audio Swap will come to the Beam and Ray in “late summer / early fall.”

In a live Q&A video, Sonos’ Adib Mehrabi and Cameron MacLeod offered a more specific timeframe for when the Ace’s signature feature will expand to the company’s other soundbars. Sonos is targeting late summer / early fall.

That’s also when Android users will be able to set up TV Audio Swap in the first place.

Apple WWDC 2024: the 13 biggest announcements

Apple’s WWDC keynote had a lot to do with AI.

Google Classroom has useful features I never knew existed.

That’s what I discovered after Google released its new Education Navigator today, a central hub for training, tools, and resources teachers can use in their classrooms. Practice sets with automatic grading? Awesome. Projecting Google Slides to students’ computers to help them stay focused in-class? Even better.

Was anyone still using the Fitbit web dashboard?

Because bad news, it’s going kaput starting July 8th. After that, you’ll have to use the app. It’s not super surprising given how much effort Google’s put into redesigning the Fitbit app. Or how long it’s been since the web dashboard’s had a meaningful update of its own. Even so, it’s the end of an era.

Replacing the Sonos Ace battery is easy. The headband? Less so.

iFixit has completed its teardown of the Sonos Ace headphones, and it’s always interesting to see how a company’s first product in a new category differs from what’s come before.

The battery seems easy enough to swap for a new one. However, Sonos has warned there’s “a pretty important acoustic seal” that you risk damaging if you get it wrong.

A game where you click a banana is now #4 on Steam.

Banana currently has more PC players than Apex Legends, Naraka Bladepoint, Rust and GTA V — and it’s closing in on PUBG. Two weeks ago, it was #47; it rose from #8 to #4 over the weekend.

How the heck? Polygon has a great writeup:

AI makes Google Search gobble up more energy and water.

Data centers already use a lot of water and electricity, and adding AI overviews to Google Search only makes those problems bigger.

AI uses “orders of magnitude more energy” than traditional search engines, Hugging Face researcher Sasha Luccioni tells Scientific American.

Correction: Apple’s AI emoji are generated on device, not in data centers.

Mini Maker Turbo Mini X: your socketed desktop processor in a transparent PC less than 1.5 inches thin.

Mini Maker wasn’t on our transparent gadget radar, but I’m fixing that now! The Turbo Mini X looks incredibly svelte for something with a 65W Intel desktop chip inside, and there’s a companion eGPU with direct PCIe connection that’s allegedly faster than Thunderbolt. It’s not just vapor: Tom’s Hardware saw one.

Google Home’s Favorites widget is now available for everyone.

It lets you put shortcuts to Google Home devices directly on your Home screen and can be resized to one tile, three tiles, six tiles, or a total of 9. Lights can be controlled directly, but devices like cameras and thermostats launch the Home app.

The widget launched in public preview earlier this month and is now rolling out to phones and tablets running Android 12 and higher.

Correction: It is 9 tiles total, not 6 tiles.

I Saw the TV Glow’s Jane Schoenbrun is headed back to summer camp.

Summer camp played a significant role in I Saw the TV Glow, but it’s going to be an even bigger part of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma director Jane Schoenbrun’s upcoming horror comedy about “a queer filmmaker hired to direct a new installment of a long-running slasher franchise.”

Some big changes are coming to League of Legends esports.

For 2025, Riot Games is adding a third international event, a new type of draft for certain series to encourage teams to use different champions (aka player characters), and new, condensed leagues for Asia-Pacific and the Americas.

I’m excited to see how these adjustments play out.
