Pass the chips – computer chips, that is.

If any of the big chip companies build a factory in the U.S. – why not Illinois? State Rep. Mike Halpin (D-Rock Island) is sponsoring a tax incentive.

The covid 19 pandemic has kind of exposed some of the cracks and the stresses in the global supply chain,” Halpin told a House committee Thursday. “As you know many of these microchips are needed for standalone computers, vehicles, agriculture equipment, things of that nature. They have been in short supply to the point where we see dealerships with very few cars.”

The great majority of the chips – seventy percent overall and ninety percent of the more sophisticated chips – are manufactured in Taiwan or South Korea.
