Chapter 1: May 1 - Workers

Chapter Text

Jyn could see the workers as they moved about the docks, loading and unloading ships, from beneath the gray green waves where she lurked. The Rebellion workers tended to be rather quick and precise when they were preparing ships to set sail from the port of Yavin. Often they were unloading much needed supplies to feed the ever growing force that sheltered on Yavin Island, away from the dangerous eyes of the Empire.

Jyn didn’t like the Empire. They had a tendency to hunt magical creatures, either hunt or try to capture and subdue them so they could be put to work as cogs in the Imperial machine. That was how she’d lost her shoal. They’d refused to help Imperial ships navigate through a rocky shallow part of the sea, so they’d slaughtered most of her shoal, taking her father as prisoner. She’d only survived because Galin had sent her off into deeper waters where the air breathing Imperials could not follow in large numbers.

Through a series of events that had nearly killed her and the mostly human crew of the Rogue One, she’d ended up helping the Rebellion in their fight against the Empire. Now she spent much of her time patrolling the waters around Yavin, keeping an eye out for unfriendly ships.

“Jyn!” she heard one of the workers call to her above water, and with a flick of her tail she surfaced, blue-green fish tail fanning out behind her as she leaned on a nearby rock. “Ah, Jyn, a small lockbox fell over the side of this ship, on the other side, think you can get it for me, please?”

“Yes,” she replied, much better at verbalizing in the human tongue now than she’d been as a child. Saw, her father’s half Mer friend who’d raised her after the deaths of her shoall had taught her the human tongue.

With a nod, she dove back beneath the waves, her eyes scanning as she slipped deeper into the waters of the cove, searching for the metal lockbox. It took only a few minutes to locate and retrieve. She carried it under one arm and swam back to the surface, presenting it to the dock worker who’d asked for her help. The man gave a slight smile and a thank you then went back to work, and Jyn returned to her patrol.
