Biden to Veto Tariff Rises on Forced Labor Chinese Solar Imports

Essay by Eric Worrall

“… this joint resolution would undermine .. jobs and investments in the solar supply chain and the solar installation market.”. But what about China’s alleged use of solar supply chain slave labour?

Biden threatens to veto House resolution to end solar panel tariffs freeze

BY ZACK BUDRYK – 04/24/23 12:24 PM ET

President Biden on Monday vowed to veto a congressional resolution that would undo his freeze on solar panel component tariffs should it reach his desk.

In a statement Monday, the White House called the moratorium essential to allowing the U.S. to transition to renewable energy while it builds its domestic manufacturing capacity.

This rule is necessary to satisfy the demand for reliable and clean energy while ensuring Commerce is able to rigorously enforce U.S. trade laws, hold trading partners accountable, and defend U.S. industries and workers from unfair trade actions,” the White House said in a statement. “Passage of this joint resolution would undermine these efforts and create deep uncertainty for jobs and investments in the solar supply chain and the solar installation market.”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s (R-La.) office has said the measure, which invokes the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to end the freeze, will be brought to the House floor in the week ahead.

In my opinion tainted Chinese solar products shouldn’t be hit with tariffs, they should be banned.

Almost the entire global solar panel industry is implicated in slave labour, according to Anti-Slavery International and Sheffield Hallam University;

Report exposes solar panel industry Uyghur forced labour links

Our responsible business manager Chloe Cranston explains why, for the solar panel industry, Uyghur forced labour is a serious problem

Today, researchers at Sheffield Hallam University have published a report which concludes that almost the entire global solar panel industry is implicated in the forced labour of Uyghurs and other Turkic and Muslim-majority peoplesThe solar industry and governments must act now to make sure the global transition to clean energy has human rights, decent work and sustainability at its core, and is not done off the back of crimes against humanity committed against Uyghurs.

As now is well known, the Chinese government is perpetrating mass human rights abuses against Uyghur and other Turkic and Muslim-majority peoples in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (Uyghur Region), known to its local people as East Turkistan, including forced labour. Legal and human rights experts have defined the abuses as crimes against humanity and genocide.

Sheffield Hallam’s research provides clear evidence on the use of forced labour in the production of raw materials and other inputs for solar panels in the Uyghur Region, and how this is used in the global solar energy industry’s supply chain. Of particular concern for the solar panel industry, Uyghur workers are involved in the first stages of productionincluding to crush quartz rocks and working in the coal-fuelled furnaces for the production of polysilicon, as well as further along the supply chain.

Obviously China strenuously denies using slave labour. And before you ask, I don’t know if Hunter Biden is on the boards of any Chinese solar manufacturing companies.

There is also the issue that Biden has repeatedly promised green manufacturing jobs for Americans. I’m not sure how that promise is supposed to be compatible with maintaining a flood of low cost and allegedly slave labor tainted renewable energy product imports from China.

Maybe people waiting for the promised green jobs can follow President Biden’s advice to New Hampshire coal miners, and learn to code.

Yes, as long as she is in the upper ranks, and not one of the peasants, of course. they always see themselves as being one of the anointed leaders, and you little people need sturdy sandals.

People like Figueres don’t understand that they will be the first to be sent to forced labor camps when communism becomes totalitarianism, as it always does. If they’re lucky. If not, they will simply be murdered, like Trotsky and others too numerous to name.

In my opinion tainted Chinese solar products shouldn’t be hit with tariffs, they should be banned.

Do that and you end any hope of a transition.

The only way this transition can happen in the USA is to burn more coal in China. Solar panels, wind turbines and all the hardware to make a grid work using them are net energy sinks. Someone has to burn a lot more coal to build them. China has established itself as that someone.

Any country involved in THE transition must transition their economy away from energy intensive manufacturing and leave that to countries that are climate atheists.

China is progressively establishing itself at the head of the table. They are running the show through their UN and WEF puppets.

Rick, Excellent review. Grid scale solar power is an international economy destroying menace. Grid connected home rooftop solar is even worse. I live in Cali so of course I have it to collect $0.30 kwh credit for midday electrons on moderate temperature days when the FMV is <$0.03 kwh. But “I don’t maka the rules I just playa the game”. “Sheffield Hallam’s research provides clear evidence on the use of forced labour in the production of raw materials and other inputs for solar panels in the Uyghur Region, ”

I don’t put it past China of course, but I’ve seen 70 yrs or so of NGO BS in person, particularly the anti development types panning all types of projects in Africa. I’d like to hear and see “the clear evidence” and the stamps in their passports. I’ve been disappointed in some stuff from my otherwise heroes, Homewood, Driessen and Ronald Stein on this subject. This suits the purpose of arguing against the human global warming meme, but its tainted by the sources of this stuff. As sceptics, we must be scrupulous and not use fake news dropped in our lap by the same lefty Malthusians that operate the global warming industry.

Here’s a simple ‘tell’ readers can rely on, particularly if you’ve spent time in Africa. Note the same old photos used ad nauseam in these articles of young men and children in the Congo. They are well fed and well dressed with nary a patch anywhere on their clothing. Also, being short-listed for a Pulitzer these wokey times may not be a plus.

Just because some photos are pulled up out of a stock online photo gallery when a article is written,. does not mean these atrocities don’t exist an on a large scale. we have reliable testimony from refuges . And heck you don’t have to go to China or Africa to find it.
A lady just testified before congress about essentially indentured servitude right here in the US. ( children and adults having to payoff their “ debt” for illegal transport to US thru Bidens wide f.. open borders. I’m sure things are much better in China or Africa ( sarc)

Okay John, I’ll just have to revise my half a dozen decades of personal observations and get with the program!

It’s real hard to converse with today’s social engineered core subject educated minions. I guess my ‘tell’ regarding well-dressed patchless clothes on enslaved child workers seemed not to have rung a bell with you. What if they were turned out in tuxedos with red cummerbunds and spats. Would that be something to make you think?

I just did an “image” search with the string “child labor in Congo”.
There are many returns, but how can anyone know the authenticity of them?
I always wonder who and how these are taken.
The search string “forced labor in Uyghur Region” generates different sorts of
images.
For some perspective, have a look at the images here:

For me, sources like Mine Watch, Greenpeace, etc. cant convince me of anything. I certainly wouldn’t use the photos of the clean, nicely dressed seamstresses in your link to illustrate the horrors of a slave sweatshop.

Here is a typical photo of well-dressed and well-fed villagers that illustrate such cranked out articles. People in areas well endowed with minerals make a much better living than their compatriots in farm and bushy poor areas. The clean, untorn and unpatched clothing screams this fact out! Of course many photos are posted and paid for.

From what I read in the news the Chinese gave a whole lot of money to Hunter Biden. I’m not sure why they gave it to him. I’m sure they had their reasons. Maybe he just has an irresistible smile? But now Joe Biden tells the Chinese we will continue to buy their slave labor solar junk. And the Progressives and the Woke-E-Dokes think that’s so cool. It’s a win-win. Hunter Biden gets his money, The Progressives can virtue siganl with their solar gadgets. And the slaves get ignored.

It started in the ’80s/’90s and it was called “outsourcing” and was billed as the answer to high labor costs in the USA. In return we would free up our “laborers” to be trained for higher level jobs. Answer centers went to India, then to phone trees, the chip industry went to China along with TV and home appliances, all in the name of “increased production” and lower consumer costs. Easy sell to manufacturers and consumers didn’t understand the consequences. Welcome to Marxism 101 and the “wealth redistribution” Obama mentioned in his first inauguration speech and everyone thought he was talking about raising every Americans’ living standard. Fooled you.
