Some Illinois lawmakers want to make it so pet shops can only sell cats or dogs that are obtained from an animal control facility or animal shelter.

House Bill 1711 would stop pet shop operators from selling dogs or cats that come from breeders.

The proposed bill would also prohibit pet shops from selling cats or dogs that come from a person who sells the animals at auction.

If signed into law, it would become effective about 6 months later.
