The following contains major spoilers from the March 16 episode of CBS‘ NCIS.
This week on NCIS, Gibbs landed in the dog house when a brash act of aggression threatened to end his career. In the end, was Boss’ bacon able to be saved?
Or did the episode end up paving the way for series star Mark Harmon to appear only on a part-time basis, in the event NCIS is renewed? (As THR.com reported at the time of NCIS: New Orleans‘ cancellation, Harmon — whose contract is up — was poised to call it a day until he learned that his doing so would get NCIS cancelled; as such, he entered talks to return for a handful of episodes if the show returns for Season 19.)
The episode “Watchdog” opened, at least, with a roadside accident that nearly left a live missile in the middle of a street in Falls Church. But when NCIS arrived on the scene, Gibbs grew interested in the fate of the dog that the Navy transport had swerved to miss. The pit bull in question, eventually dubbed “Lucy” by Kasie, was found not far away, bleeding from a gunshot wound. When delivered to a nearby veterinarian for treatment, NCIS learned that it was the third such dog to be brought in with a gunshot wound.
Gibbs, McGee, Bishop and Torres sniffed around a house in the woods, beyond where Lucy had been found. Its proprietor, a little old lady, alerted the team to a guy who regularly parks his trailer by her pond, ostensibly to fish. But when Gibbs looks into what the guy has submerged in the pond, tethered to a rope, he discovers several drowned pit bulls. Incensed, Gibbs sees the man, Luke Stana, emerge from his trailer, and makes a beeline for him. Stana can barely get a word out before Gibbs is whaling on him, knocking him to the ground. Gibbs starts to choke the (alleged!) animal abuser, before Bishop and the others pull him off.
Once back at HQ, Gibbs is returning from we can assume a chewing-out by Vance when Inspector General Coyle shows up to cuff him and take him away. But before Gibbs surrenders himself to Coyle, he quietly orders the team to “tell the truth.”
Except… McGee, Torres and Bishop don’t. Instead, they spin a story of Stana tripping and falling — though that is far from consistent with the victim’s suspect’s injuries. Gibbs is disappointed to hear what story his team told, but before he is himself interviewed by Coyle, a lawyer named July Wunderman shows up to put a halt to the proceedings — though Gibbs subsequently relieves the Vance-appointed stranger of her services.
When the little old lady from before balks at serving as a witness to Stana’s questionable behaviors, that leaves the team with no hard evidence connecting the hospitalized lout to the dead/abused dogs. At best, they have a working theory that he is involved in an illegal dog-fighting ring, has been juicing pit bulls with steroids, and when the pooches lose, he… drowns or shoots them. Stana, though, seems to have an excuse for every piece of it, including the wad of winnings found in his mattress.
Luckily — though it sure seemed extra-damning at first! — McGee happened to be beta-testing a body cam during Gibbs’ clobbering of Stana, and the video reveals a pre-existing blood stain on the dog owner’s shirt. Kasie is able to connect that blood to gunshot Lucy, who is currently recuperating post-op at NCIS. Alas, Stana has checked out of the hospital, but a GPS tag on his dainty poodle’s collar leads the team to him, where they catch him clearing out the location of his dog-fighting ring. NCIS has been yanked off the case by IG Coyle, sure, but Coyle is standing right outside the barn door with the local police, ready to haul in the cretin.
Gibbs had already cut a deal with Coyle, to tell his side in trade for him team being left untouched. So imagine everyone’s surprise when the case against him lands in limbo due to “evidentiary” issues. As Vance later explains to Gibbs (who now has taken in Lucy), Coyle and his wife have two rescue dogs, so there was little sympathy for Stana. That said, it has been left to Vance to inflict punishment. And when Gibbs says that yes, he regrets what he did — as in, he wishes he had killed Stana — Vance is left no choice but to suspend his top Special Agent indefinitely, so Gibbs turns in his badge and gun. (And no, that wasn’t Harmon’s own dog playing Lucy.)
If this storyline did, in fact, set the stage for Harmon/Gibbs only appearing in a handful of Season 19 episodes, are you OK with that? Keeping in mind that incoming addition Katrina Law would help fill the void as a series regular for any next season?
If Gibbs is part time or leave next season then McGee should be next to lead the team like Tony did when Gibbs left the last time
Agree
Gibbs would definitely want McGee to move up into his position.
It is only right.
Absolutely!
ABSOLUTELY! No Gibbs means NO SHOW!
no Gibbs No Show
Why????
I have watched every episode NCIS with Gibbs, I know I dont count for much but NO GIBBS NO SHOW FOR ME EITHER !
Totally agree!!
100%. The new boss should be McGee,, the show might be worth watching if McGee gets that promotion. Gary Cole will ruin it
Actually this makes sense to have Gibbs deal with his consecutive losses he’ll still be on the show just not on the job. I know Phineas is slated to comeback soon from the actor’s instagram and I think that will be part of Gibbs’ journey this season finding himself outside of work. I do hope McGee steps up in the leadership role in the rest of the season. And I do wonder what role Katrina Law will play in the future will she be the new official member that Sloan and Quinn were or will she be an every now and then character like Reeves was.
Agree! Gibbs has been not dealing with things and while at first I disagreed with Vance, I realized that this was the one way to make Gibbs take time off from work.
McGee is next in line and will once again take on the team, but I do wonder about the trajectory of that team from now on.
It will be interesting to see how the next season unfolds.
there will be no next season for me
Without Gibbs, NCIS will be lost.
I hope that Gibbs doesn’t leave the show. He is the Show.
TOTALLY agree!
I agree Karen, without Gibbs it is just another COP show.
Totally agree!!!!
I agree April 6th episode was terrible, if that new guy is on again, I may change my mind about watching it. Mark Harmon is N,C,I,S
I agree
Better to have Harmon part time instead of not at all. Full time, every day would be best!
Same for me. I was surprised because he had stated he would stay as long as the show did.
Me either, if it’s as bad as this last episode on Tue, April 6th. That was worst episode I have ever seen.
I agree. It was bad enough taking Gibbs down but the other new agents I will not watch.
Frees him up to work on NCIS: Hawaii.
I doubt Mark Harmon would be interested in having to relocate to Hawaii for the months it would take to film the show. He is able to go home to his family when they finish filming each night, and he couldn’t do that in Hawaii. I don’t think anyone else who is on NCIS right now would be interested in Hawaii either, except maybe Emily Wickersham, but the others all have families that live in the area and like not having to do all the travel.
True. And we’ve all seen what happened to 5-0 when they hired an actor who didn’t want to locate to Hawaii. Working around his lack of interest ruined the show.
it did not.. H50 was just fine with and without Scott… Glad many of the side cast getting some time on Magnum…
From what I understand, Harmon does not live where the show is currently filmed. With Pam Dawber now being cast in four episodes, it seems like there might even be another reason to stay off a few episodes a season. This all seems to be the same type of uproar over Cote, Weatherly, Pauley, etc. leaving.
Mark Harmon lives in Brentwood, a section of Los Angeles. The series takes place in D.C. but is shot mostly in Santa Clarita–just up the freeway from Brentwood.
Too many AWESOME characters kept leaving starting with Kate. Every loss I would try to be open to the new characters and actors but MAJOR loses like Ziva, Tony, Abby (LOVED her) then Ducky…it was all too far removed from the original show I fell in love with. Gibbs leaving or even just losing screentime will be the killshot….no Gibbs, NO SHOW
LOL! OK…
Wait, who are you replying LOL to – working on Hawaii, or Harmon relocating to Hawaii???
I am still trying to figure out the Blind item from almost two years ago — was it about Gibbs then? Where he Harmon was ready to leave but TPTB would end the series?
THR article states NCIS is the most expensive and most watched. Maybe having Harmon go part time will help them determine if the show can make it without him. I thought it’d be very different when Ziva, then Tony, then Abby, and then Duckie left. But it’s been great and I think the younger cast (McGee, Ellie, Torres, Jimmy, Kasie) could seriously carry it. Well. Wait. Maybe not. They need Gibbs. Ugh. 😢
Really, Magee.
Show would not make it through season 19.
i really like McGee, Ellie, Torres, and Jimmy, but i think they still need “Boss.”
They could bring Scott Bakula’s Pride in from New Orleans.
That thought just occurred to me today. Rumour was that NO’s cancellation was because Bakula was wanted in something else (either Star Trek related or Quantum Leap revival being the popular guesses) but it could be to have a similar character to Gibbs take over the MCRT.
I second that! See my comment below on that!
Good idea!! I still don’t understand why they are cancelling NOLA.
Yes, it is an ensemble cast now. Harmon can show from time to time, and the show will be fine.
NCIS is one of the few shows left that hold interest with realistic storylines and good actors. The key to show is gibbs, I don’t know if the show can make it without him. I get after 18 years Mark Harmon may want out but man will the show miss his level handed character.
completely agree!
I agree 100%
No offense to the actress, but Katrina Law’s character can’t replace Gibbs; it just won’t work. I can completely understand if Mark Harmon wants to cut back. Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing Tim McGee leading the team with Gibbs helping out, but even at that, I don’t think it would work long term. I don’t want to see the show end, but I would rather have a final shortened season to tie up the story and honor the legacy of the show than try to bring in another character in place of Gibbs.
McGee too wimpy to head ANY team. Gibbs is the one and only for this. The other 2 team members are beyond boring. As far as I am concerned, they never did make sense on this team.
Yeah, I agree.
I totally agree
i will be really sorry to see the end of NCIS, but a shortened season with Mark Harmon being part-time would be easier to take.
Agree here also. I didn’t care for her when she was on Hawaii 5-0. She didn’t bring anything to the show. Tim would be ok if it meant keeping the show alive. I like him. But then again, I heard rumors that Bull might now be renewed. Tony coming back in place of Gibbs!? Now that would be cool!
If they’re reaching the point where Harmon is only going to a recurring part of the show then maybe it’s time to end it. Eighteen seasons is a long time for any show.
No we have to have Gibbs and why is the season already over
There are still 6 episodes to go this Season.
must have gibbs/harmon. period.
exactly!
Harmon has been re-signing at the end of every season for about 4 seasons now, so the idea that his contract is up isn’t as dramatic as it sounds. It’s been up every year since at least season 14. He re-signs when the show gets renewed.
That being said, while I think they will get a season 19, it’ll be another short one, and they’ll start writing towards a proper ending for Gibbs. The guy’s 67 (the character, not the actor, who is 69). He’s well passed gov’t retirement age. Start nudging him in that direction instead of this “indefinite suspension” excuse (because we know it won’t be indefinite).
I think Vance may have to force Gibbs into retirement, to be honest, ’cause, going along with what Brandon said above, since when has Gibbs or his team EVER just laid down like lap dogs, and done as they’re told? Though, I have to agree with everyone saying the show won’t be the same without him. He’s been like the father figure to so many of for so long, it’s just not possible, to replace him.
Show jumped the shark – will be lucky to make it through next season.
With 10 million viewers a week, making it network TV’s highest rated scripted show? The only thing that will make CBS end it is the fact it’s one of the most expensive shows to make. They don’t care if they’ve jumped the shark or not as long as the money coming in is more than the money going out.
I have been watching NCIS since day one and I would hate to see Mark Harmon leave. But think about it-he is 69 years old and I am sure he is getting tired. His contract is up this year, so why not ride into the sunset to spend quality time with his family
There is no ncis without Gibbs. It
Would
Never
Be the
Same
Agree 💯
No Gibbs, no more NCIS for me.
Not sure it will work without Gibbs. Jimmy would be the only one left?
Jimmy and McGee both started in Season 1 but neither were in the original Season 1 premier cast. If Harmon (Gibbs) moved to recurring appearances he could keep the continuity and Ducky has still been recurring ( McCallum came to set for the 400 episode and filmed remotely for the Palmer episode).
No GIbbs no NCIS
NCIS cannot exist without Gibbs. Period. Retire the show if Gibbs is not leading the team.
A ncis Hawaii might be worth watching but they really missed the boat by not doing a spinoff with agent fornell and the fbi
MARK HARMON’S CHARACTER GIBBS IS THE ” CEMENT/GLUE” OF NCIS. W/O “GIBB’S” THE SHOW WILL NOT BE NCIS ANYMORE: THE “HEART OF THIS SHOW” WILL BE GONE=END. SORRY, HARMON IS “NCIS” AFTER 18/19 SEASONS=U THINK❓
Oh, please, not Furnell! He’s tolerable as a sidekick, but can never be the star. How can anyone disagree with that?!
I’m afraid no full-time Gibbs will mean no NCIS beyond one more season, if that. Nobody else on the team has even near the strength of presence that he does. The show needs a solid anchor.
Absolutely NOT ok with this. The show isn’t NCIS without Gibbs. Is covid trying to kill off every favorite show I have? I have been watching for 18 seasons… if Gibbs is gone I will have to say goodbye to one of my all time favorite shows.
Nowhere in the article is there anything about COVID, you should read the it again. It clearly states that apparently Harmon didn’t want to renew his contract after the 18th season but was told that the show would end if he left.
I am already planning to quit all NCIS shows if NCIS New Orleans is canceled. I only watch FBI because it comes on after NCIS, so I’ll quit it too. I quit Hawaii 50 because the lead white actors got a raise while the lead Asian actors did not. Have not watched any new CBS dramas like Clarice or the Equalizer. So goodbye CBS.
Ncis nola has been canceled already. Hawaii 5-0 was canceled a couple of years ago so no one got raises there!
H50 just ended last season so it wasn’t canceled a couple years ago.
Really sad to see them cancel NCIS New Orleans as it was my favorite show. Of course it’s not been the same without Mary and LaSalle but the few remaining main characters I really like and they’re more like family. Not happy with the changes to NCIS LA.
You left because Whites got a raise and Asians did not? ….you are kidding, right?………………………you are a buffoon and another anti white hack.
Glad you are gone!..now get…..get…..get….get!
I never realized that I had been watching the show since halfway through the first season till now. No Jethro, no NCIS for me. I would like another season just to give Gibbs a happy send off.
No don’t want to see Mark Harmon leave. I watch because of him. Always liked McGee.
Miss Ziva too
Very, very disappointed even though I know Mark Harmon has to leave the show sometime. I have watched since episode 1. Love this show
No, if Gibbs is gone I will not watch it,I have seasons 1-17 now and season 18 will my last.Gibbs and HIS team make NCIS and no one can change my mind m
NCIS is my favorite of all the NCIS’s and then NCIS NOL. It’s taken me a while to warm up the NCIS LA. I think Gibbs deserves a good send off and having him part time would be great way to work our way there. Not sure if the show could survive without him unless a good character comes in. Hey, bring back Denozo to head NCIS! Maybe that would work
Screw Dinozzo, he is a ham actor who in real life thinks his poop doesn’t smell. He is as arrogant and useless womanizer as I have ever seen on TV. By the way he sucks on Bull also.
I like him as Bull. But agree 100% about him as diNizzo. The thinks-he’s-so-funny womanizer (except when he was wooing Jeanne) needs to stay in Paris with his and Ziva’s little girl. Please don’t bring back Tony D.
