Old Gods

Summary:

"I told you this was a bad idea."

Notes:

Written: 9/25/13 and I don't think I ever posted it here, so here's a small offering to the gods while I work on longer things.

Work Text:

The banging on the door increases in intensity.

"I told you this was a bad idea," the Doctor accuses as he maneuvers his sonic around River and attempts to hastily re-button his shirt with his free hand.

"And I told you to fix the wiring an hour ago." River shifts, tugging her dress mostly to rights and reaching over the Doctor's head for three of the wires they're ensconced in.

"Yes, well," the Doctor stretches to solder together two wires and thump a piece of metal back into place, "you've not exactly been helping, you know."

River rolls her eyes and refrains from mentioning that she's helping now. "You're the one who guaranteed that you could wake the old god, sweetie - I'm just along for the ride."

The Doctor blushes even though they're alone. He glances at River and quickly away again at her raised eyebrow and wicked grin, adjusting the settings on the sonic instead. "Almost there."

"And then what?"

"And then what, what, dear?"

"They're not exactly going to be pleased when they burst in here and find out we've been crawling around inside their god."

The Doctor lifts River off his lap and stands quickly, adjusting his clothes as he goes. "Well, their god will be miraculously resurrected. We'll run for the TARDIS while they're distracted."

River reclines lazily against the heel of the robot, incredulous. "That's your plan?"

"It'll work." He flips the last lever and hastily backs out of the robot, snagging River's hand. "Ready?"

River laughs and shakes her head, but her fingers lace through his. The door gives in, soldiers spilling through, and for a long moment they simply stare at River and the Doctor and the still-not-awake-god in confusion that is rapidly giving way to anger.

"Any time now, sweetie." River's hand twitches against his and he sees her other moving towards her gun. Out of the corner of her mouth, she hisses, "Did you check the battery?"

Thankfully he is saved from his indignant reply by the old god's eyes slowly powering up.

The soldiers in front of them freeze.

River and the Doctor run.
