The mama opossum lives under my house and every year I watch her carry her babies around then “kicks them out of the nest” and I welcome the company. They’re the only North American marsupial, they can’t get rabies and they eat bugs like ticks. What’s not to love?

Mom was sleeping but I put her by the entrance to the nest and they’re all together now.

Glad you saved it from your doggo. My neighbors killed a momma possum in my tree. I woke up to her in my back yard with her babies attached. I took them off and brought them to wildlife sanctuary down the road. I hope they’re well, we need them out there to eat bugs and other things!
People need to educate themselves better on this type of thing. Certain snakes, spiders, and rodents are more good than harm and should be allowed to live their best lives.

One time i heard a scream so awful I was sure an animal was being eaten alive outside my window. It wouldn’t stop either so I ran outside to see if I could scare whatever was going on away.... it was a baby raccoon sitting in the middle of the street crying for its mom to come back. Nightmare lol
What happened to its mom? They often get hit by cars :(

hey guys be nice to raccoons there super cute wash there food and there super smart we used to feed them cat food at the country club i worked security at so they would stay out of the trash and i used to have a baby i called little skip who would climb me and rest on my shoulder

They do carry equine protozoal myeloencephalitis though - it's hard on horses.

Raccoons seem to be prone to rabies
Overall, due to some physiological differences from placental mammals, marsupials don’t carry rabies as easily. Opossums being notorious for rabies is a myth.
Looked it up. They have a lower body temp which seems to keep rabies away. But they can carry other things and be invested with mites and lice.
To be fair, even birds you bring in have mites and lice too.

They can get fleas. Had one living under my bathtub in a raised house and started getting fleas in the bathroom (old house, could see the sun shining up through the holes in the grout of the wood floors)
Good on you. My 5yr old gsd brought a baby one in the house a couple of weeks ago. Woke up to them cuddled up together.
Love possums, they are, hands down, my favorite animal. Don't hurt anyone, just wander around eating nasty stuff that needs to be cleaned up. So many people are afraid or them but if they would learn more about them would come to love them. Are so cute when you see them up close.

Last year my pup was frantically dancing around one in the yard while barking his fool head off. I called out to him and got his attention and the possum dropped off the low retaining wall and disappeared. For that I am thankful.

Used to dislike these animals and think they were pests like other rodents. Then I found out they eat ticks and can eat up to a thousand a day. Now they are one of my favorite animals. Fuck ticks.

Yeah, it got a boo boo on it’s arm but I watched her and made sure she could walk and make it back to her family. I’ve seen her walking around my garden since so she’s good.

This happened to me brought dog indoors mom came and got her baby.

Mine killed one last week. I was so sad. Then brought a “dead” one INTO my house. Luckily for the lil guy, he was just playing possum. Luckily for me, my fiancé was home so I didn’t have to carry his wiggling self back outside.

Just a friendly reminder that it is now the season that opossums have their babies. So if you come across a poor unfortunate opossum that has been hit by a car. Please reach in and save her babies as they often survive. It is actually a very clean pouch!

I love opossums! They're so cute. We had one that would sneak into our house to eat the cat food when I was a kid. I named him Henry and was always excited when I spotted him.
