Local housing authorities to receive federal grants

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Hundreds of thousands of dollars will be going to housing authorities in the Stateline.

17th District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced federal housing grants will go to numerous housing authorities in northern and central Illinois. The grants total up to over $860,000, over half going to the Stateline, and will go to funding services like child care, transportation, and job training.

Locally, over $230,000 will go to Northern Illinois ReACH, formerly known as the Winnebago County Housing Authority, $180,000 will go to the Rockford Housing Authority, and $72,000 will go to the Freeport Housing Authority.

Congresswoman Bustos says these grants will support families going through hard times.

"Every family deserves access to safe, affordable housing and opportunities to grow in their community," Bustos said. "I'm pleased to announce more than $860,000 in federal grants that will help remove the barriers facing too many families and set folks up for success. Across Northwest and Central Illinois, these grants will help hardworking families reach their financial goals."

The grants going to the housing authorities are through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
