I read that 100 years ago, squirrels were popular pets. I wonder why it's so rare these days?
because they make terrible pets
Yeah, they require a lot more space than say a gerbil, degu, or hamster, they're not really any more intelligent, but they're way more destructive. Plus they're territorial little bastards to boot.
Don't get me wrong I think they're adorable, but I think racoons are adorable too, but I'd never suggest one as a pet.
You're much better off with a rat, or some Guinea pigs or something if you like rodents.
Chinchillas are pretty rad, and they are hydrophobic so that's pretty rad too!
Because other pets are easier to keep and maintain? Aren't squirrels critters you have to take to an "exotic animal" vet? While a dog or cat just go to regular vets which are a lot more plentiful.
Plus in some areas they might not be allowed to have unless you are a licensed wildlife rescuer. 100 years ago if people wanted to keep a squirrel, they could just take one from the wild (likely grabbed a baby). These days there are a lot more rules and regulations. According to a brief websearch, keeping a squirrel as pet in California is illegal, while Florida is one of the few states that let you.

Well it‘s very toxic for them… rodents (here the squirrel) are especially sensitive to the persin in avocados… I hope this squirrel is well.
I actually thought the same thing, I know some one who lost some sugar gliders due to some one feeding them avacados.
the skin and the pit are toxic, not the flesh. Many different small animals benefit greatly from eating avocado.
Quick note, avocado pits and skins are toxic to squirrels and other animals. I assume the fruit itself is fine here.
