41 "Shang-Chi" Details That Are Small, Amazing, And Make This Marvel Movie Even More Epic

There are so many great references to Marvel comics in Shang-Chi.

🚨Warning: There are MASSIVE — and I mean massive — spoilers ahead for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!🚨

Hi, hello. If you're here, I'm assuming you're like me and you can't stop yelling about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. So, to celebrate this pretty perfect MCU movie, here are all the details I noticed:

If you're new to these posts, welcome, and I apologize for all of my nerdy yelling! If you're returning after my WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black WidowLoki, AND What If...? Easter eggs/details posts, thanks so much for coming back!

Now, since this is our first Marvel movie in a while that is only in theaters (🎉), we aren't going to have as many cool photos because I can't go frame-by-frame and screenshot exact details, so please enjoy my very lively descriptions.

    1. First, in case you need a refresher, the mysterious Ten Rings have been mentioned quite a lot throughout the MCU. In fact, we first heard about them way back in Iron Man when Tony Stark was captured.

    2. Of course, we also get the fake Ten Rings in Iron Man 3 when Trevor, who is now my favorite actor in the MCU, impersonated Wenwu. Trevor even alludes to this when he first meets Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing.

    3. Also, in the Marvel One Shot All Hail the King, you can see that Trevor was broken out of prison by the Ten Rings and Wenwu, which he talks about in this movie as well.

    4. And in Ant-Man, a Ten Rings agent met with Darren Cross when he was showing his work with Pym Particles and the Yellowjacket suit.

    5. The Ten Ring's logo has also been updated and now includes the appropriate Chinese characters, thus adding to the fact that the logo we saw in previous MCU movies could've belonged to the imposter organization.

    6. Just a cool behind-the-scenes fact, but the cinematographer for Shang-Chi, Bill Pope, also did the cinematography for The Matrix, so you can see some similarities between the two movies.

    7. Shaun, aka Shang-Chi, has some iconic posters in his bedroom, and from what I could see I was able to spot Kung-Fu Hustle, The Godfather, and The Warriors.

    8. While at karaoke, Shang-Chi and Katy sing "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf, "A Whole New World" from Aladdin, and "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X.

    9. And I am absolutely obsessed with the fact that Lil Nas X had to have survived the Blip because Shang-Chi and Katy sing "Old Town Road" at karaoke. Honestly, it's iconic.

    10. When Shang-Chi picks up Katy at her family's apartment before work, you can spot a poster talking about the Blip that reads, "Post-Blip anxiety? You are not alone. National Blip Support Hotline."

This isn't the first time we've seen posters about the Blip. There were also quite a few in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Also, the advertisement for the hotline in Shang-Chi is reminiscent of Steve's support group from Avengers: Endgame.

    11. And right next to the Blip support poster, there are smaller posters for "Blip Sync," which according to Shang-Chi screenwriters is a dating app for people who were Blipped.

In an interview with Collider, Kevin Feige revealed that Shang-Chi featured one of his favorite Blip Easter eggs, and god, I hope it's this. He said, "This movie has one of my deepest cut Blip references, Easter eggs, in it. I don't know if you noticed it or not, but I love it. And it is obscure. I want to see if we can bring it into other movies, but let's let people see the movie and decide."

    12. Razor Fist, who battles Shang-Chi on the bus and later joins the fight in Ta Lo, is based on a Marvel comic book character. In the comics, Razor Fist not only fights Shang-Chi, but also Deadpool and Wolverine.

    13. Also, most of the Shang-Chi comics deal with Shang-Chi's father sending dangerous assassins after him in an attempt to kill him, so Razor Fist and his minions being sent by Wenwu fits the trend.

    14. Death Dealer is another villain from the Shang-Chi comic book universe who appears in the movie. In the comics, Death Dealer, aka Li Ching-Lin, worked with Shang-Chi's father and was a former MI6 agent.

    15. During the epic bus fight, you can see Shang-Chi use his jacket as a weapon, which is a nod to Jackie Chan. It's a move similar to one Jackie famously used in Rumble in the Bronx in 1995.

    16. The hilarious guy who livestreams Shang-Chi's fight on the bus was also seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming as a street vendor. Both characters are played by Zach Cherry.

    17. Golden Daggers Club, aka the fight club in Macau that Xialing runs, is named after the Golden Daggers from the comic books. In the comics, Shang-Chi's sister, who has a different name, leads the criminal organization that rivals her father's.

    18. The fight club has so many incredible Easter eggs if you're looking for them. First, you can spot a Widow — yes, like Natasha and Yelena — fighting what looks like one of Maya Hansen and Aldrich Killian's Extremis soldiers from Iron Man 3.

    19. The biggest fight we see at the Golden Daggers Club includes Abomination, who is a classic Hulk villain from the comic books, and he also appeared in The Incredible Hulk.

    20. Now, this one is a little hard to spot, but in the fight club you can see what looks like the Madripoor flag painted on one of the walls behind Shang-Chi. Of course, Madripoor was prominently featured in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

    21. This isn't really a hidden detail, but I just love how Wong has basically become the new Coulson and Fury of Phase 4, as he is essentially seen recruiting new people.

    22. When Katy is hanging off the side of a building and the pole begins to crack, it's a nod to a similar scene from Rush Hour 2, where Lee and Carter are in a similar situation.

    23. When Shang-Chi, Xialing, and Katy are taken to Wenwu's compound, it's a reference to Shang-Chi's father's fortress in the Marvel comics. Located in the mountains of Hunan, it's where his father trained the Warriors of the Deadly Hand.

    24. In Xialing's bedroom, you can see a poster for AC/DC on the wall near her bed.

I just love this connection to "Back in Black," which is just a quintessential Tony Stark song. It was played in Iron Man, and there's the hilarious moment in Spider-Man: Far From Home when Peter doesn't know the song name while building his new suit. AC/DC was also featured on Steve's to-do list in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

    25. When talking about the names he's been called over the years, Wenwu mentions "Master Khan," which is one of the names the Mandarin is known by in the comics.

    26. Li and Ying Nan's home of Ta Lo is also from the comic books. The village only appeared in Thor Issue #301 when Thor visited Ta Lo while trying to revive some fallen Asgardians.

    27. When Shang-Chi, Xialing, Katy, Trevor, and Morris enter Ta Lo for the first time, we get a look at some incredible animals that inhabit the village that are actually based on mythical Chinese creatures.

Kevin Feige hilariously revealed that some early audiences believed the creatures were actually Pokémon

    28. Dragons obviously play an important role in Shang-Chi, especially in Ta Lo, and since the movie is set in 2024 — after the events of Avengers: Endgame — it's cool to point out that it would be the Year of the Dragon.

    29. You can spot some fox-like creatures standing on rocks in Ta Lo. These are based on Huli jing, aka nine-tailed foxes.

In Chinese folklore, nine-tailed foxes could be good or bad omens depending on the story being told. They've also been known to shape shift.

    30. Then, you can see large phoenix-like creatures flying overhead, and they are based on Fenghuang, aka mythical birds from Chinese mythology.

Fenghuang are immortal birds whose rare appearances are said to be an omen "foretelling harmony at the ascent to the throne of a new emperor."

    31. When Shang-Chi, Katy, Xialing, and Trevor's car suddenly crosses paths with a large creature that Trevor calls a "weird horse," it's a Qilin, which are mythical hooved creatures.

Qilin are unicorns — so Trevor was kind of right with "weird horse" — who are known to coincide with the "imminent birth or death of a sage or illustrious ruler."

    32. The lion-like creatures who assist the Ta Lo villagers while fighting the Ten Rings are likely a nod to the Guardian Lions, aka Shishi, that are often featured in Chinese architecture.

    33. And, most importantly, Morris is based on the Chinese mythological creatures called Dijiang or Hundun.

    34. Ying Nan tells Shang-Chi, Xialing, and Katy about the Dweller-in-Darkness and how Ta Lo has stopped it from being unleashed on the world. In the comics, The Dweller has the ability to create fear in any living being, and that's how he gains power.

    35. Also, the Soul Eaters that protect the Dweller-in-Darkness are also a take on classic Marvel comic book characters.

    36. The Dragon Scale armor that Shang-Li's mom leaves him is a nod to Shang-Chi's comic book outfit, which looks very similar and is also red.

    37. I don't necessarily know the reasoning, but when Wenwu wields the Ten Rings they are blue, and when Shang-Chi does they are orange/yellow.

    38. In the first post-credits scene, Carol and Bruce are talking to Wong, Shang-Chi, and Katy using the same hologram technology they used in Avengers: Endgame when communicating with Natasha.

    39. While examining the Ten Rings, Wong mentions how they are super old and have been around forever, which could mean we will get more of their backstory in future MCU movies.

In the comics, Makluans are a race of aliens — they are literally space dragons — who have advanced technology and who created the power rings that the Mandarin uses. There's also a theory that the signal coming from the Ten Rings could link to the Eternals coming to Earth, and I would personally FREAK OUT.

    40. Also, one of the biggest things to note from the first post-credits scene is the fact that Bruce is no longer Professor Hulk, and you can see that his arm is still in a sling, which is likely from when he used the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame.

    41. And finally, Xialing's post-credits scene is making me hyped for her future in the MCU because not only does it look like she's starting her own verison of the Ten Rings, but she's allowed women to train too.

As I mentioned above, in the comics Shang-Chi's sister leads the Golden Daggers, which is a criminal organization. Here's hoping Xialing's organization is better than the Widows and the Red Room.
