Microsoft announced the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 in its E3 2019 press briefing. The Game Critic Awards crowned it "Best of E3 2019–Hardware/Peripheral" soon after.

Since then,we have seen the release of the Xbox Series X|S in November 2020—with full compatibility across all Xbox consoles and Windows 10 PCs—the question is, is the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 worth buying?

The Xbox Controller Just Got Better

Putting design aside (which is undoubtedly stylish), the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 boasts some pretty impressive specs.

There are 18 assignable buttons on the controller, including the four paddles at the back. Inside the box, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 includes a thumbstick adjustment tool that allows users to change the thumbstick tension manually.

It's possible to physically customize the controller by changing the D-Pad and thumbsticks, where you can indulge in retro throwbacks like the Xbox 360 thumbstick caps.

In addition, you can make adjustments to the thumbstick sensitivity curves via the Xbox Accessories app.

Compared to the Xbox Wireless Controller, this level of customization offers players the upper hand in a match, heightening the overall Xbox gaming experience.

One-upping its predecessor, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 adds an extra customization profile slot, making a total of three slots that save independent mapping and responsiveness.

Players can easily switch between profiles in an instant by pressing the central button above the tri-lights.

Without a Paddle

The Xbox One Elite Series One controller saw the introduction of back paddles. Among other genres, racing gamers really saw the benefit of these and thankfully the Series 2 controller doesn't try to fix something that isn't broken.

While you can install the paddles from Series One, the Series 2 controller features slightly shorter paddles—but the difference is negligible if you're really fussed about it.

Charge It Up

Arguably one of the most defining features of the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is its wireless charging capabilities. This, coupled with its palm-sized charging dock, gives players up to 40 hours of uninterrupted gaming.

The small-form-factor dock can sit comfortably next to your TV, on a side table, or safe in its carry case.

High-performance gaming controllers shouldn't require batteries—Microsoft recognizes this by introducing a powerful internal battery for the Series 2 controller and it's a welcome upgrade.

Stay Connected

Microsoft's Series 2 controller has settled concerns surrounding the older version's lack of Bluetooth connectivity.

The Elite Series 1 controller forced players to jump through unnecessary hoops to be able to use their controller on a PC or smartphone.

The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 features Bluetooth and USB-C. Offering a more universal connection, gamers can now leverage their luxury controller with other devices.

A Compatible Match

This brings us nicely on to one of the controller's most sought-after features—wider compatibility.

The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2's Bluetooth connectivity means it can connect to many devices, including iOS and Android smartphones, Windows 10 PCs and Laptops, and the Xbox Series X|S.
