Exclusive: Watch a teenage Kate Hudson audition for 'Almost Famous' in new vintage footage

Kate Hudson has been a familiar Hollywood face for more than 20 years following her breakthrough in "Almost Famous." But just wait until you see a teen Hudson when she was literally almost famous.

A 4K Blu-ray release (out Tuesday) of Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical 2000 coming-of-age film about a young Rolling Stone journalist in the 1970s boasts a bunch of new bonus features, including extended scenes, a "rock school" for actors and a look at the casting process. USA TODAY has an exclusive clip featuring never-before-released footage of Hudson as a 19-year-old working with co-star Patrick Fugit, dancing and showcasing an infectious energy.

"Kate is so full of life and she’s so wild but yet sweet at the same time," casting director Gail Levin recalls. "For a young girl, she was just so sexy and cool. I just loved her." And Crowe chimes in saying that watching Hudson created "the very particular feeling of when you first set on eyes on somebody who lights up the room."

Hudson, the daughter of actress Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson, won a Golden Globe and scored a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Penny Lane, a groupie for the band Stillwater that helps kid reporter William Miller (Fugit) on his journey learning about life and love.

Speaking over the vintage footage, Hudson discusses how even at 19, having read scripts "my whole life," she immediately knew that "Almost Famous" was something special: "You go, OK, this doesn't come around very often and I want to be in this movie."

Hudson is currently filming the "Knives Out" sequel with Daniel Craig in Greece.
