SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — Two hundred people received free bus passes for the Sangamon Mass Transit District (SMTD).
On Friday, July 10, the Eta Psi Sigma Foundation of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity partnered with Ward 2 Alderman Shawn Gregory and Ward 3 Alderman Doris Turner to make it happen.
The funding came from the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln.
"With the COVID-19 epidemic, there are a lot of folks that were perhaps affected financially negatively, and so what we're doing is to give them bus passes to help them over the hurdle," said Phi Beta Sigma Foundation Treasurer Steven Richie.
The fraternity and foundation wanted to help meet the needs of the community who relies on SMTD for transportation.
