There is said to be a comprehensive investigation underway at the Department of State headquarters in Washington, D.C following a report that a swastika has been found etched into an elevator door. BuzzFeed reported the news on Tuesday (July 27).

The swastika was apparently found on Monday, and the Department of State sent an email to employees on Tuesday about the finding.

“Last night I heard that a swastika had been discovered in an elevator at the Harry Truman building. In a letter to his Jewish colleagues, Antony Blinken announces that the hateful graffiti was removed and the incident will be investigated. Sadly, this shows that anti-Semitism remains a reality. It’s still a force around the world, even close to home. It’s a disgrace. Neither the United States nor the State Department are a place for it. It is our responsibility to stand up and reject it.”

There is concern on the site that there could be anti-Semitic elements in the building.

Swastikas have appeared in random places for years. This is not the first instance. A Minnesota couple brought swastika masks into Walmart at the height of the COVID-19 epidemic. Walmart employees called out the woman who wore the symbol at the time. An odd explanation was offered by the woman in response.

“I am not a Nazi,” she said. “I’m just describing what’s going to happen in America. You’ll be in Nazi Germany if you vote for Biden. It’s going to be like that.”

In addition, the couple was prohibited from shopping at Walmart for a year. A memorial to Anne Frank, in Idaho, was vandalized months later with swastikas, as well as a threatening message. “We are everywhere,” read the note.
