The students of Creekwood High School are about to get redistricted. The 10-episode first season of Love, Victor — a follow-up series to the 2018 big-screen romantic comedy Love, Simon — will now premiere on Hulu, not Disney+ as was originally planned.
According to multiple reports, the move was a result of Love, Victor‘s mature themes, from drinking to sexual exploration, none of which felt family friendly enough for Disney+.
Love, Victor, which stars Michael Cimino in the title role, follows a new student at school “on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation.” Though an official premiere date has yet to be announced, the show will reportedly premiere in June. Additionally, a writers room has reportedly opened for Season 2, strongly suggesting that Disney will ultimately renew the teen dramedy for more episodes.
The cast of Love, Victor also includes Ana Ortiz, James Martinez, Isabella Ferreira and Mateo Fernandez. Though Love, Victor will follow a different group of students than we met in Love, Simon, the series will be narrated by Nick Robinson (aka Simon), who also serves as an executive producer.
Love, Simon screenwriters Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker will serve as co-showrunners of the half-hour series.
Your thoughts on the expansion (and move) of the Love-verse? Drop ’em in a comment below.
The title change seemed inevitable as it made close to zero sense to still call it Love, Simon. I’m for the network change too if it means they can more realistically explore these themes (and selfishly b/c I have Hulu but not Disney+ yet). Also seems like further confirmation Disney+ is going to keep things super family friendly (well when it comes to sexuality anyway, they are cool with the violence of the Marvel movies and shows though).
everything you said!
Andi Mack is there, isn’t it? It has a gay character. I think the new High School Series show has one too. I can understand Love, Victor not being a fit with Disney+, as, say, Riverdale probably wouldn’t be either. I mean, even their marvel shows are nothing, seemingly, like the gritty Netflix Marvel series.
Yeah but the character on andi mack was never in a relationship until the series finale unlike the straight characters.
Andi Mack and the new High School Musical series have lgbt+ characters. I think, perhaps, Love, Victor was a bit more mature, a la Riverdale. I can see it being a best fit for Hulu. Even the Netflix Marvel shows probably wouldn’t be greenlit at Disney+. I don’t feel it’s a matter of discrimination, just the particular fit.
yes I meant actually having characters explore the topic of sexuality (of any orientation), not the mere existence of a gay character. I know Disney+ has gay characters, I don’t think they moved it b/c of that. High Fidelity was originally Disney+ too and after having watched it (and loved it) Hulu was definitely a better fit and so it seems it will be for Love, Victor too.
Does this mean we in the UK won’t get it? Was looking forward to see it on Disney+ when it launches here and we don’t have Hulu in this country :/
Disney is planning to make Hulu available internationally next year.
It seems in terms of “Disney” DIsney+ content it will remain more Disney Channel than Freeform. However, it seems Star Wars and Marvel content will not be bound by the same standards. Mandalorian isn’t grotesque and overly violent but its not PG either.
But it’s a tame PG-13. It’s a lot tamer than people expected.
Am I wrong that when the TV spinoff of Love, Simon was first announced, it was supposed to focus on a female lead struggling with HER sexual orientation? At the time I remember thinking it so odd they’d choose to piggyback off of Love, Simon but go in another direction. This is good news that it’s now Love, Victor and skews closer to the Love, Simon premise – I’m happy about that.
.
My big question is how Hulu will release it. At Disney+ it almost surely would have been on a weekly release schedule. But at Hulu it could be either all at once or weekly. (Yes, Hulu goes both ways!)
No. This was always the pitch. The book has a sequel focusing on Leah, but the TV show was always imagined as a Latino follow-up.
I think you’re thinking about the book sequel. Which was about Leah from the first book. And her sexuality. The tv whatever spin-off has always been about a new student. And was always a weird choice for Disney+.
Shame on Disney for moving Love, Simon / Love, Victor from Disney+ to Hulu. This is a clear manifestation of the homophobia of Disney. Shame on Disney.
Disney owns Hulu. The show is under the same unbrella.
Thank goodness. I was afraid disney would water it down and make it to kid friendly. Also I don’t even have disney+ but I do have hulu.
Looking forward to this show. Just canceled my Disney+ subscription, as they focus too much on the family audience and lack of original scripted programming. Will subscribe to Hulu when it comes to Europe.

Shame on Disney!

This is GREAT news! This was the one show on Disney+ that was making me actually think about getting the service. Now that it’s on Hulu I’m all set to watch and enjoy!
I have no problem with the move, if they are exploring other mature themes, it’s one of the big reasons they bought Hulu, to give their products a multitude of options for distribution. Like the article says, High Fidelity started at Disney Plus also.
I hope it remains on Disney+ in Australia. We don’t have Hulu and I really wanted to watch this show.
How very disappointing. As an Aussie, we don’t have Hulu, only Disney+.
So, it seems unlikely I’ll be able to view this series. I guess Disney+ is keen to avoid any and all LGBTI characters. It possibly explains why “Four Dads” was cancelled, despite having a good cast.
I don’t see how something like The Mandalorian which has “mature” themes is okay, but Love, Victor is not? How is Disney+ going to treat a sex-positive character like She-Hulk in her own series? Will her romantic entanglements be limited or are they happy to have sexual exploration if it’s between male and female characters?
The Mandalorian was super tame compared to expectations and tamer than the films. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has gay characters and it’s a Disney Plus original targeting tweens and teens. Andi Mack, which featured an even younger cast, also had lgbt characters. I guess they wanted to make Love, Victor a bit more mature than those.
