This may be a silly question.
What is the Maine Coon population of cats in Maine in relation to non-Maine Coon cats in Maine?
I can't help but feel (hope) that there are a half-dozen of these majestic kitties everywhere you look in Maine. If I'm wrong, don't tell me. Keep the dream alive.
For me, I picture tons of Norwegian Forest Cats wandering around Norway.
Indeed! And wherever they go, they bring a little bit of forest magic with them.
As someone who lives in Maine, sadly in my area (central to western) there are not many Coon cats at all. Maybe it saves us though because if there were my mother would take so many off the street it would be unhealthy.

Alternatively, if the breed of cat doesn't matter and things haven't changed too drastically over the last 20 years, I'd recommend OC to visit Mykonos (Greece). Been there as a kid, and approximately 75-80% of pictures from that holiday include cats - they roamed everywhere and were really nice and patient with little "I need to pet them all!"-me. But they were "just" your regular house cats in all possible colors.

She’s a great cat, and she’s got a great personality. But it’s a big personality.
When my alarm goes off in the morning, she comes in and demands a head scratch. She’s affectionate, but we always say she’s very aware of her bodily autonomy lol
She’s a lot more like a dog - she’ll follow me around the house, she plays fetch, she brings me random things to throw for her.
I wouldn’t trade her for the world... but I think “oh my god, could you imagine if we had two of her?” :-)

They just have big personalities. They can be willful jerks, but they are also incredibly loving and hilarious.
I love her personality. We’ve got a Ragdoll (Inara) as well, and it’s hilarious watching them interact.
If they were people, Inara would be the princess-type who doesn’t want to get her shoes dirty, and Belle is the well-intentioned but crazy friend dragging her into all kinds of mischief.
I have two maine coon mixes. They are the most affectionate cats I ever met. Also getting two ensures that they will keep each other busy. They also need more stimulation so that they don't go crazy. We have a lot of toys and also hunting toys. The hunting feeder toys especially help a lot with behavioral issues (our boy was waking us up in the middle of the night because he was bored).
Well, mine is SUPER clingy. I dont know what it is, but there’s something about him he’s a very unusual cat.

Pretty young? LOVE the feet. I have a MC mix and never a dull moment. He won't ever get huge but he has the tail, the feet and best of all, the personality.

Usually Maine Coons look a little raggedy. But this one is beautiful.
They require daily brushing to brushing every 3 days at minimum. We give ours sanitary trims once a month, and a monthly bath. Ours like to get into dusty places and with the cold Canadian air... their tails just acts like a Swiffer duster lol.
We started brushing them young, and have kept it up so its fairly easy to trim and brush them. Bribery also works with treats in a pinch.

What a beautiful animal, and such unusual coloring! At that angle he almost looks like a bobcat. Very close to looking wild.

I have always wanted one, but living in the South with blistering hot Summers and high humidity, I just worry it would be too hard on them.
That is a fair concern. Mine hug the AC unit in the summer and we are in Canada, Ontario... though to be fair the temps here can be high in the summer months, more so then you would expect. (Just not for the entire summer like you have).
I am a big fan of Maine Coon mixes. Growing up our neighbours PB Willow, got into some trouble with a DSH named George. They had a litter of beautiful kittens. They were self trained to fetch, gentle, all the temperaments of Willow and the inquisitive traits of their Dad. My friend in highschool who did not live in the base, adopted one of the MC mixed kitties. He was her everything. When she moved out he would take the elevator with her up and down in the apartment. Percy was just a joy and was ultra loving.
Mixes can be interesting to spot. Percy had all the MC features except for having extra long lynx tips on his ears. He had very small ones if you looked closely. However he had the long foot floofs. angelwing ear hair, long body , (rectangular spine shape) maine, and bushy tail.
Some mixes do not keep the Maine Coon long hair though. So thats what I am getting at. Those ones would probably have no trouble living in SC. If you can properly ID them (shelters will sometimes lie - or at least make mistakes ) so its good to know what traits to spot or look for. Petfinder would be your friend in finding Mixed Maine coon kitties.
You will need this. Also don't be afraid to pop into the Maine Coon subreddit if you want a second set of eyes to spot MC traits.
I really could not go back to another type of cat I adore how social these ones are. They choose to be in the same room, follow us around, they want to spend time with humans. Its so utterly sweet. However mine do not like to be held they want their own autonomy. I have to try and resist being grabby <3
My daughter has a cat that I really think might be a short hair MC. His intelligence, size and dog like qualities are incredible. Of course no way to find out, but man, he is a beast. She named him Dozer, because he is very much like a bulldozer compared to her last cat. Thank you for the information!
