Alex Murdaugh And Late Wife Argued Over Dwindling Funds And Bounce Checks Weeks Before She And Son Were Murdered

Alex Murdaugh's marriage to his wife Maggie was already in trouble after the couple reportedly argued over dwindling funds and bounced checks in the weeks before she and their son Paul were found dead in their hunting lodge.

His late wife reportedly confronted him about their finances after a check she wrote for a charity bounced.

An insider told Daily Mail, "their marriage was absolutely on the rocks," and Alex was already "checked out of the family" before the tragic incident took place.

"Alex and Maggie didn't look at each other like they were married," the source, who claims to have known the former couple for three years, claimed. "There was no love lost between them. I never saw them touch or be affectionate to each other."

They continued by claiming the duo's finance issues got so bad that Maggie "started squirreling money away in her closet."

"I don't know if that was because she was planning to leave or because she knew that she didn't always have money to pay the bills," the informant said. "She confronted him about money more than once, and his response was always the same, 'Leave it to me. I'll figure it out just like I did the last time.'"

According to reports, Maggie knew Alex was dealing with opioid addiction and had been dealing with it for a while, but the money problem was "new for her."

"I remember one day, it must have been a few months before she was killed, she was crying because she had written a check at a charity luncheon, and it had bounced," the source recalled. "She thought at first there must have been some mistake, but when she found out there wasn't, she was mortified and upset."

The source also explained that Maggie never "had to think about money" while married to Alex, so she was "picking her battles" when she started questioning him about their funds.

The family friend also disclosed that Maggie was worried that her son Paul would "inherited his father's problem with addiction." Hence, she started asking him to spend more time with her and help her out with the dog kennels. The two later were found dead in their cabin in South Carolina.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Alex's nightmare began in June when he came home to their hunting lodge and found Maggie and Paul were shot to death. The legal heir frantically called 911 to inform authorities about the horrifying situation. The case remains unsolved, with the officials providing very few clues regarding the incident.

Following the tragic event, Alex had reportedly surrendered himself to authorities for his alleged suicide plan to secure a $10 million life insurance payout for his last surviving son Buster.

In addition, the former attorney was also accused of embezzling over $1 million from his law firm PMPED which had prompted the firm's bosses to order him to step down from the company and hired a forensic accounting firm to conduct an investigation.

Murdaugh had been under investigation concerning the death of the family housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield. Last week, the sons of Gloria reportedly reached an agreement between the estate of Satterfield, attorney Cory Fleming, his law firm, Moss, Kuhn, and Fleming, and their insurance carrier.

Just weeks before her and her son's killings, Maggie also reportedly met up with a divorce lawyer to discuss the possibility of ending their marriage as she started to look into their assets and planned to be financially independent.

However, the spokesman for Murdaugh, Amanda Loveday, denied the reports by calling them "salacious" and "totally inconsistent" with narratives coming from friends and family.
