“Us percussionists, our repertoire is not as old as other instruments, so it happens to be modern, contemporary or even avant garde by nature,” says vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, talking about her journey from classical playing towards improvisation in The Wire 443. “And even in that repertoire you have to improvise sometimes so my mindset was already there – avant garde and experimental jazz or improvised music.”
Brennan has played with many improvising groups over the last decade, but this is her debut solo release. Maquishti features 12 instrumentals composed and performed by Brennan on vibraphone and marimba, which aim to explore the tonal and textural qualities of her instruments.
Read more about Brennan's influences, engagement with the jazz tradition and improvisation in Daniel Spicer's interview in The Wire 443. Subscribers can access the article via the digital archive. Maquishti is released by Valley Of Search 15 January and available to pre-order now.
