Dries Mertens has tipped Belgian national team teammate Romelu Lukaku to be a success in Serie A for the coming years.

“I spoke with Romelu Lukaku during this summer, before he signed for Inter; I have no doubt that he will be successful in Italian football,” Napoli star Mertens explained in an interview with RTBF.

Mertens then proceeded to discuss his future, with his contract with Napoli due to expire at the end of this season.

“I do not see myself going to China or Qatar, I hope to play for as long as possible at the top level. I can also exclude the possibility of returning to Belgium at the end of my career.

“I am very proud to have done what I have in Serie A, which remains a very tactical league even though it has become more attacking in my years in Italy.

“People have always told me that I was more suited to football Spanish, but I never had any offers from Spain.”
