The delay in obtaining the files related to constructions that have taken place in Maradu is hampering the investigation into Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) violations in the local body.

The State had recently assured the Supreme Court that the investigation in Maradu will be completed by month-end.

Though the local body was asked to share 482 files related to constructions in the coastal areas, it has not reached the special team constituted by the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA) to probe the violations. Reminders would be sent to the local body as there was no response on the request for files, officials said.

291 cases of violations

Recently, the team had detected 291 cases of CRZ violations in Maradu and most of these cases were related to the construction of small houses. No files related to construction of apartment complexes and commercial buildings have reached the authority so far. Though the CRZ rules mandated that prior permission of the authority was required for all the activities in the coastal area, no files were seen send for clearance, authority officials said.

During the first stage of investigation, the survey numbers of the holdings in which the suspected violations took place were verified with the Coastal Zone Management Plan area for Maradu. The identification of violations were possible as the CRZ areas and the survey numbers of the holdings were marked in it.

In the second stage, officials of the Town Planning Department, Revenue and local body will be asked to inspect the structures to identify details of violations and ascertain distance of the buildings from the High Tide Line of the area. Responding to the developments, M. Arif Mohammad Khan, secretary of the local body, said the files would be despatched shortly.
