Busola Dakolo, other Nigerians react as the first national Sexual Offenders Register is launched in Nigeria

Busola Dakolo, other Nigerians react as the first national Sexual Offenders Register is launched in Nigeria

The Nigerian Sexual Offenders Register was launched today, November 25, 2019, and Nigerians have hailed this move as a step in the right direction.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) launched the sex offenders register to curb sexual violence in Nigeria. They chose today, which marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women, to launch the register.

To clamp down on sexual abuse, NAPTIP set up a database of those convicted for sexual violence. Record will be available online to help the public, agencies & police.

With this register, victims can now report an incident and also go through the names of those convicted. The register has a search feature which enables individuals and organisations to access information on the identity and location of arraigned sexual offenders.

The sexual offender register will contain the names of anyone prosecuted for sexual violence in the country since 2015.

A number of Nigerians took to various social media platforms to react to this.

Busola Dakolo, who accused COZA pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of rape, also reacted writing: "Today, marks the beginning of the 16 days of Activism against Violence Against Women and is also the day when National Sexual Offenders Register is being launched by NAPTIP with the support of the European Union."

Very good! That means some people’s names will appear like 5 or 6 times as they continue to mess around with several people. The register eventually will be made accessible to the public and such persons told not to get close to victims within 500 meters. Very good!

Copying nonsense from the western world. In Nigeria you can marry a 12-year old as a wife and recognize by Some religious laws as such. And you can marry about 4. Are you going to put their husband as an offender? Pls let Bisola be #1 in this register for raping the Coza pastor and crying rape after so many decades when the man does not want to continue. At least the Courts ruled against her.

These white people are agents of destruction. They want to rip apart our society like they have done to theirs. Look at how polarized America is today. These issues can be dealt with in better ways than shame and making people bitter and resentful.,instead of making them remorseful.

Great initiative, the question is: will this stop men/woman from still raping one another? It's always great to have such bodies put in place in order to govern our debased societies.

It should not violet peoples rights as accusation is different from conviction, Its therefore not right to capture accused on this register as most accusation may be for cheap publicity and blackmail

This is an awesome idea, there is a huge force against violence of any sought which is really incredible. But ivestigate properly before registering suspects though. Innocent lives matters too.

"Today, marks the beginning of the 16 days of Activism against Violence Against Women...". Who cares about Violence Against Men? Why isn't the effort against Violence Against Humans or better still, VIOLENCE? Hopefully, that list will contain female sexual predators and most importantly, hope the 16day activism will cover female perpetrators too. Isn't that the equality we want?

It should only contain names of those who were actually convicted of the crime. Otherwise it is unconstitutional.

I wish this will work but Nigeria does not have any database. We are still maintaining our analog record which gets missing and burnt. So how will this work
