La Stampa have revealed part of the heated telephone conversation that was had between Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta and former manager Luciano Spalletti in recent days.

Inter’s city rivals AC Milan had identified Spalletti as the man they wished to replace Marco Giampaolo with but in order for this to come to fruition, Spalletti had to reach an agreement with Inter to terminate his contract early.

As per the report, Spalletti is understood to have told Marotta in no uncertain terms, “If you are paying Conte €12 million, you can pay me at least €5 million,” after Inter reportedly offered Spalletti €3-4 million.

Marotta refused to back down or succumb to Spalletti’s demands and as a result, it led to AC Milan’s pursuit of Spalletti collapsing.

After the collapse, the Rossoneri focused their attention on another former Inter manager in the shape of Stefano Pioli, who they officially announced as Giampaolo’s successor earlier today.
