Facebook has opened ad breaks to all qualifying video creators to help them earn money.
In a bid to popularise original videos and compete with YouTube, social network Facebook said it would support Indian content creators by sharing advertising revenue with them.
Facebook will insert ad breaks in videos and allow their creators to get a 55% share of the revenue that comes in. Starting immediately, ad breaks will be available for eligible partners in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam and English, Facebook said during its first Indian “Creator Day” event here on Friday.

The ad breaks can be included in long-form videos that are three minutes and more in length. While ads will be placed at natural breaks to create a better experience for viewers, the creators can always choose their own placements or turn off ad breaks for individual videos.

Among other guidelines, videos can be published only from a page – not a profile – that has at least 10,000 followers. To be eligible for the programme, a creator needs to have 30,000 one-minute views of videos in the past 60 days.

“The biggest trend that the Indian digital industry has witnessed in consumer behaviour is rapid growth in adoption of video. We’re seeing consumer videos exploding on our platform and today, video has become one of the biggest drivers of engagement growth on Facebook,” said Paresh Rajwat, head of product for video at the company.

Rajwat added that besides community content, where people share their experiences, Facebook is a platform where professionals come to find an audience and earn money.

“Facebook Creator Day reinforces our continual commitment to support the publishers and creator community in India, helping them grow and monetise their videos on the platform,” he said.

Facebook also announced ‘Brand Collabs Manager,’ a tool that will help companies to find creators to collaborate with for branded content opportunities on the platform. With Brand Collabs Manager, creators can quickly generate a portfolio so that companies can learn about them and get in touch for partnerships. This facility will be available in India in 2019.
