PORT ORANGE — For the third consecutive year, the Spruce Creek-Seabreeze rivalry ended with the clock running.

Thanks to a dominant first-half performance by senior Marvin Scott, the Hawks (1-0) ran away with Friday’s season-opener, routing the Sandcrabs, 63-8, in front of a sold out Pop Johnson Field.

“Sometimes you get out here and you don’t know what to expect,” Creek head coach Andy Price said. “You think you know but then things happen. We just wanted to come out and play well, and I think we did.”

Here are three takeaways from Friday’s showdown:

Great Scott!

For the second consecutive year, Scott had his way with the Seabreeze (0-1) defense, rushing for 174 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. Scott, who didn’t play the second half along with most of the Creek starters, had runs of 22 and 27 yards, and ended the second quarter with a 67-yard score.

The senior star had 212 yards and four scores in last year’s season-opening win against the Sandcrabs.

“I felt great, felt healthy,” Scott said. “I felt like I could move and had the speed to get to that green grass.”

Scramblin' man

Scott wasn’t the only one running wild, as Creek QB Nick Christiano did plenty of damage of his own, rushing for 72 yards on just eight carries in the first half. Christiano's 20-yard touchdown late in the half made it 49-0, and the senior also threw a 26-yard touchdown to Sebastian Moran.

Junior QB Logan Garcia played the entire second half for Creek and added a 4-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Minckler.

“He does a great job, he’s really matured from last year," Price said of Christiano. “He’s really got command of what we’re trying to do.”

Signs of life

The Sandcrabs' offense struggled for most of the night but did show signs of life on their final drive of the first half, marching down the field in the closing seconds and scoring on a 3-yard pass from QB Thomas Davidson to Trevon Phillips.

Running back Evan Williams had runs of 10 and 15 yards on the drive and finished with a team-high 23 yards on just three carries, while Davidson threw for 150 yards but did have three interceptions.

Seabreeze receiver Tashod Troutman led the ‘Crabs with three catches for 75 yards.

Defensively for Creek, Camari Nelson had a pick-6 in the first half, while Sam Rizzo had a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery.

“We had about two players play with some legit effort,” first-year Seabreeze coach Pat Brown said. “We’re going to watch the film and see what guys really love football."

What’s next?

The Hawks will take an early bye week, while Seabreeze will host Matanzas.
