Hi all,

I am vaping a SMOK Stick M17 and an finding that I am having to change the coil weekly, is this normal???

How offten should the coil be changed??

Smok coils are well known for being of inconsistent quality. I've never had one last more than 4 days. Truth is coil life varies depending on brand and how you use it (liquid, power, etc), so unfortunately the answer to your question is as long as a piece of string. For stock coils I've found mesh ones last the longest for me, but I've only really been using rebuildable coils myself over the last couple months.

A list of interchangeable coils for various tanks on Reddit here.

I didn't realise the coils were that bad!

I'm vaping at 30w and using a 50/50 liquid, I did hear that the coils have a shorter life if using 70/30 ???

Thanks for the link B0rkedBear, very interesting.

Dud stock coils on my iSub are what got me into using RDAs. Sick and tired of burnt out coils in tanks after a couple of days costing a fortune

Welcome to the forum Peter.

How do you know you are vaping at 30 watts?

Also which coil have you gone for? the 0.6 Ohm's sounds suitable for 50/50.

That aside, a trick I learned on YouTube is pop open the filler cap now and then to let air in, it's works a treat on my Prince Stick, using thick 70/30 juice too.

I have no explanation how it works but it does for me, it was monkey see monkey do and pleasantly surprised by the extended stock coil life.

Does filling the tank with juice require a top removal? I thought this would let air in too?

It works because the tanks work thru pressure. When you open the tank it releases the pressure which allows juice to flow. That's why tanks often leak when filled up and left without being vaped first or dry pulls being taken to put the pressure into the tank.

Alternative is to use a needle and carefully poke a couple of small holes in each wick port.

I change out a coil when the flavour drops away dramatically, or if it tastes off all of a sudden. If it still tastes good I keep going.
Some people don't taste them go off as quick as others either. My misses doesn't. Sometimes I ask her if the coils ok and she'll say yes, but I'll taste it and think no it needs a new one. When she says it's off you can guarantee it's right off!

Not sure where I got the 30w from, probably completely wrong!

I tend to change the coil when flavour drops and the taste stays the same with a different juice!

Also noticed that after a week, the top of the coil is very black - is this normal??
