NFL rumors: Former Eagles draft pick placed on injured reserve after clearing waivers

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Shelton Gibson passed through waivers unclaimed on Tuesday. As a result, Gibson will revert back to the Eagles’ injured reserve list.

Gibson was waived with an injury designation on Monday in order to make room for cornerback Sojourn Shelton.

The wide receiver missed a handful of training camp practices due to an ankle injury. He also missed the team’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans.

Prior to the ankle injury, Gibson was competing for the team’s fifth wide receiver spot in training camp. His competition included 2017 draft classmate Mack Hollins, Charles Johnson, Greg Ward Jr., Marken Michel, Carlton Agudosi, Braxton Miller and DeAndre Thompkins.

The Eagles selected Gibson with a fifth-round pick in 2017. During his first two NFL seasons, Gibson appeared in 20 games and produced three catches for 59 yards. He caught just one pass for 48 receiving yards last season.

Gibson earned playing time through his special teams prowess. The speedy receiver was a standout as a gunner on punt coverage.

Despite his strong special teams showing, Gibson failed to develop on offense at the wide receiver position. The West Virginia alum was consistently buried on the wide receiver depth chart during his first two seasons.

With Gibson now on injured reserve, the Eagles can waive him off the list with an injury settlement at any point. That would allow Gibson to test the free agent market if he can pass a physical.
