Schools India Cup to be held in all districts

Top performers will be provided specialised sports training

The 2018 edition of the Schools India Cup will be conducted in all the districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the coming months.

The announcement was made at a conference convened by School Sports Promotion Foundation (SSPF) for district coordinators here on Sunday.

The Schools India Cup, an initiative of SSPF in collaboration with Sports Authority of India, will be conducted in athletics, football, cricket, volleyball and basketball in a three-tier structure – district, State and National.

Top performers will be selected for national camps, and the best among them will be selected for Centre of Excellence in reputed schools where they will be provided specialised sports training along with quality education, and boarding and lodging, free of cost, till class XII, a press release issued by SSPF said.

Speaking on the occasion, Charles Borromeo, who won 800m gold in the 1982 Asian Games, said that the Schools India Cup each year strives to give youth more opportunities to play sports at all levels. “With five sports disciplines this year, SSPF aims at reaching out to 10,000 schools across the country to provide holistic growth under National Talent Search & Nurture (NTSN) programme,” said Mr. Borromeo, who is the chairman of SSPF’s National Schools Athletics Council.

He added that the emphasis on online registration process was a way forward to digitise school sports.

Earlier, the conference was inaugurated by S. Ramamoorthy, chairman, Sowdambikaa Group of Schools.
