Trending News: Here's Exactly How Much Weight People Gain In A New Relationship

As you start to settle into that comfy new relationship filled with movie nights and takeout dinners, don't be surprised if you go up a belt size – or three.

A new survey of 2,000 people found that relationship weight gain isn't just a few pounds here and there, it's a really big issue, as Fox News reports.

The Jenny Craig-initiated survey concluded that you put on the most pounds in the first year of a new relationship – as many as 17 pounds. The amount the average couple gains in total is a whopping 36 pounds. And this isn't even the first study to say relationships make you fat.

So why is that? More than six in 10 respondents said they don't feel as much pressure to keep their weight down because they've already got somebody. Another 41% blame it on all those romantic (see: McDonald's) meals out. Thirty-four percent said takeout and drinking at home caused them to gain so much extra blubber.

Marriage doesn't help either – especially for guys. According to the survey, guys gain an average of 22 pounds in the first year of marriage and women gain 13 pounds.

But there is a silver lining that's predictably convenient for Jenny Craig. While people gain weight with a new relationship, they're working to lose it. Over half said they’ve lost weight in the past year and a similar amount said they work out with their partner. “The data shows that while people have gained weight in a relationship, they are recognizing that they need to lose it, and that is great news for their health,” said Monty Sharma, president and CEO of Jenny Craig. “
