Is this what a Green world would look like?

It’s chilling enough hearing the medical forecasts for the impact of coronavirus. But the economic forecasts are almost as worrying.

Many businesses have already sent most of their staff home. At some point it seems likely that almost everyone bar essential workers such as healthcare providers will be ordered to work from home. The impact on the economy will be cataclysmic. One forecast, by the respected Centre for Economics and Business Research, suggests that London’s output would fall by £495 million a day for as long as such a state of affairs continued.

Should it last even a week, the CEBR calculates that the London economy would lose £2.4 billion in output. Since the capital is responsible for approximately 20% of the UK’s GDP, this would mean the British economy shrinking by 6% during any lockdown. No wonder: manufacturing, for example, would simply stop if there are no workers to, as it were, manufacture anything.

You might think that such a scenario would be universally viewed as a disaster. And you would be wrong. Because there is one group — an influential group, whose influence is ever-growing — for whom such a shutdown (albeit not one caused by a pandemic) is not a disaster but a first order policy goal.

I refer, of course, to the Green movement.

Full post here.

Green activist, Jamie Margolin, sees the coronavirus crisis as a template for dealing with climate change here. If governments can shut down whole economies, she argues, why should they not do the same to “solve the climate crisis”?

The ultimate goal of Margolin, XR and the rest of the rabble is control. Control of how lives, what we eat, how we travel, what we buy, where we work. They see in governments’ reactions to the coronavirus an opportunity to bring this about.

Meanwhile Lubos Motl adds his take:

About 94,000 people are currently infected with Covid-19, a bit over 7,000 have died plus 78,000 have been cured. The number of deaths per month approximately doubled from the previous one-month period as the disease moved from China to Europe or elsewhere. Asia seems to have tamed the disease completely. China has largely reopened for business despite a dozen of new deaths per day.
Those 7,000 deaths should be compared with approximately 650,000 deaths due to flu in the world in the recent year. Covid-19 clearly continues to be a negligible killer relatively to flu – and the latter hasn’t ever led to any significant hysteria. Covid-19 may be seen to have the potential to surpass flu as a killer (and probably has done so in Italy) but nobody knows whether this potential may be realized in the whole world. Even if Covid-19 becomes the most important killer among respiratory diseases, it will be just a quantitative change in the industry of flu-like diseases.
We’re seeing amazing restrictions on the human movement, contacts, events, economy. I am writing it from the first day (out of 8) of the Italy-style softcore martial law in Czechia. Similar restrictions are imposed almost everywhere. Every hour, a country joins the lockdown; Canada did it minutes ago. Half a billion schoolkids are skipping classes now – Greta Thunberg is no longer too special. Bars and restaurants are closed in about one-half of the world. Carmakers are stopping the production in all of Europe. You can read comments on social networks written by people who were just laid off every second. Also, I think that the real es
tate prices are likely to drop once the closed hotels and other things are being sold.

Frank Plummer, 67, died in Kenya, as reported by the BBC on Feb 5th. His work was on HIV/AIDS. There is nothing on the web that suggests foul play.
      I don’t think your scare-mongering helps, Terry.

Paul, I suspect that covid-19 is being used to bring about the changes in society we feared would happen if the climate change brigade pulled the strings. CC just wasn’t cutting the mustard, it was taking too long, too many unknowns, so a quicker route has been devised. We don’t have to fear a green revolution, the underlying change is happening now in front of our eyes. Some of the nutty green stuff will happen anyway, but its a side show. It was always being used by the ‘elite’ to bring about societal change.
A new feudalism is upon us. Society and our lives will never return to BC ( before coronavirus). Much of our economies will have gone for good. The rich will be in control and the rest of us will be compliant peasants. If you look back over most of human history it has nearly always been so. The last 150 years are an abberation.

Coronavirus, as bad as it is has the capacity that the cure could be worse than the disease. But the world recovered from worse situations. Let’s face it, when the government of the day published the casualty figures for the first day of the Somme offensive they may have wrung their hands but it didn’t stop them repeating the exercise.
Now, I’m not advocating that kind of attitude prevails but I do believe the defeatism of JimW, above will not allow us to prevail. As for his idea that we do not have to fear the green revolution – which I think of as the AntiCarbon-virus, I say, (to be polite), rubbish! He talks with a large socialist chip on his shoulder.

Harry, you couldn’t be more wrong. You have completely missed the point of my comment. I do not think we shouldn’t fear the green revolution, I think its nuts on so many basis. But my point is that it was always being manipulated by the ‘elite’ for their own ends. They want carbon taxes, they want control economies, they want compliant peasantry. They want to keep the levers of control , for ever.
Encouraging the green nutters and the UN socialists was going to give them this. However it was always a long play with possible poor outcomes. The rise of what the media describe as ‘populitsts’ was definitely a spoke in their wheel.
Covid-19 is much more direct, quick, supported by the vast majority who are so easily scared. Its giving them exactly what they want. So they will still encourage green nutty policies where it reinforces the new feudal world ( and most do). But its not the main event. That is the change of a fairly open, somewhat capitalist economic system ,semi-democratic society to a totally centralised, highly controlled, mainly closed society. Which is basically where most of the western world now finds itself today.
I am by nature an optimist, but if people don’t recognise what has just happened it is very difficult to stop it. The whole of the media, a lot of the internet, all politicians in almost every country are speaking with the same voice. Its a very brave soul who can consistently stand aside from this and preach caution, think, use your brains, is the cure far worse than the disease.

Just like to add that the ‘War’ proclaimed by so many western leaders isn’t against a virus, its against their own citizens who generally are cheering them on as they wage it.

Been away. Apologies for my poor comprehension. It became abundantly clearer having read your reply. And that being the case I find I can agree with much that you say. There is most certainly an elite made up of carpetbagger politicians and overpaid, self-regarding and low-IQ actors who think they can change the world. They neglect to realise that, when it comes to politics the Eastern dictatorships have experience beyond our elite’s comprehension: The Greens are their useful idiots.

All that said, I have to conclude that either all the Western governments have lost all sense of proportion when it comes to what is (supposedly) only a super-flu, OR, they all know something we don’t – like where the ‘disease’ originated and how. (My tin-foil hat is out for repair!) Why else would all these countries risk – not a recession – a full-blown depression?

Anyway, my thanks for clearing my understanding.

The moral so far is that we should never under estimate the economic illiteracy of the green movement. If there is nothing to fear from a green revolution why is it promoted in such chilling terms? It may be because it has to be frightening to gain any traction.

Lubos seems to be overlooking the fact that the COVID-19 death toll has occurred under severe restrictions of movement and other draconian measures. Therefore numerical comparisons with flu deaths are not like-for-like, nowhere near.

Yes oldbrew I tend to agree BUT when you consider that 28,300 died of flu in 2014/15 in the UK, we do have a way to go.

I think there is an awful lot we are being fed as certainty -when its not known.

I thought the comment on Lubos article that points to testing in China being mostly done with a pneumonia virus test, not a specific Covid-19 test is interesting – and 300,000 die each year in China of pneumonia. In very few parts of the world so far do we have true infection and death rates for the specific virus. The word “potential” seems to appear often.

Some parts of Asia have already started a recovery (who knows when it may re-occur). They still have enough economy left to buy up the UK shares at rock-bottom.

I am over 70 by a sizeable margin but the cure is beginning to look worse than the disease. The idea that we can spend whatever it takes will be ruinous.

We all know how good the climate/meteorological and engineer advice is that informs government policy. Well that makes me slow to just believe what we are being fed about Covid-19. It all comes out of a model.

Perhaps I am just an old cynic.

      Stay safe

    • March 18, 2020 8:15 pm

Many cases of infection go unreported so the infection:death ratio is probably much lower.

    • March 19, 2020 3:23 pm

A significant proportion of the deaths may well turn out to be people who were in poor shape already, meaning the virus was not the sole explanation. The stats don’t reflect that AFAIK.

I distrust ALL politicians, but they must surely realise that shutting down their economy will mean a drastic reduction in tax revenues. Tax is the magic “Government Money” without which they will be rendered pretty superfluous…

No, they have worked out that MMC gives them a ‘money tree’ without bothering about tax. In fact they will just use tax to ‘destroy’ money to adjust inflation to their needs.

It’s a very stark example of what the world would look like without oil and gas. Because even if we built a renewable economy that technically works, most people would not be able to afford anything in it. And as most people also are part of the electorate, they just need examples like this in order to show politicians how to win or lose the next election.

Corona Bologna: The Truth Begins to Leak Out in Italy — The Overwhelming Majority of Deaths Are Linked to Other Illnesses
The president of the Italian Higher Institute, Silvio Brusaferro, said that medical records indicate: “There may be only two people who died from coronavirus in Italy, who did not present other pathologies.” He acknowledged that the average age of death was over 80 years old and that the majority of them had serious chronic diseases. He said that only about 100 medical records have come from the hospitals throughout Italy. The entire country of 60-million people has been locked down despite the fact that the majority who died actually expired from other diseases that have nothing to do with Covid-19. -GEG

‘Planned-opolis’. This was upoaded 2018, but I think the campaign material is a fair bit older. 4 visions of hell.

A sterile mindless controlled life in a characterless city controlled by computers, with rationed mundane seasonal food and (limited local only) travel and energy – all 3 rationed, little real free choice (your career is assigned)….. people who refuse to conform to adopting a zero carbon lifestyle are segregated and denied resources and opportunities (limited as they are). The rich still have cars though.

Paul. Could you put on the Imperial College analysis of the possible choices, from 500k deaths in the UK and 1.2m in the US, if the do little and create herd immunity that appeared to be the plan, had been continued. Altermatively, to the ‘suppress’ plan at present, using closures and social distancing for everyone and isolation of vulnerable with quarantine for households. The full measures still are expected to result in 20-50k deaths and the hospitals will still be hardly able to cope.
The report is clear and comprehensible and must have been the reason for the u turn when it suddenly dawned on them that half a million avoidable deaths would not be a helpful number for the popularity polls.
The future until a vaccine is available is also interesting. This appears to be ending closures and close monitoring and more shutdowns locally to suppress flare ups. The initial shutdown is well into late summer but distancing could be done in factories and China should be making parts soon.

It’s nothing to do with the Climate racket. The models are just computation based on the latest rates of infection and deaths from China and Italy. Have you read it? Jumping to conclusions based on the false science of another subject is illogical.

      • MrGrimNasty permalink
        March 19, 2020 4:36 pm

I didn’t say it was anything to do with the climate racket, I said the scientific/expert shortcomings were familiar – over reliance on the authority of models is why science has gone way off track, become a travesty, and rubbish data too.

The information doesn’t exist to analyse CV19 reliably, let alone model the outbreak. There are too many unknowns.

Patient zero hasn’t even been identified, so no one knows when it began.
No one knows how many people have been infected unknowingly, so no one knows how infectious it is, so no one knows what the death rate is, and no one knows how it will mutate. Any analysis using figures from China, Iran (even Italy by some accounts) is using totally unreliable data.

Perhaps the doom mongers will be interested in the latest edition of MedCram where a doctor who specialises in lung diseases teaches medical students . He quotes peer reviewed medical literature and statistics and explains the way the virus impacts the cells it attacks, all for the non scientist. There are actually records of symptoms being treated by well known medicines such as those given for Malaria.
The flattening of the numbers of people being badly affected in centres like China and Korea can be seen. Most actions of governments are for limited times only.

In the ‘unremarkable’ winter of 2017/18 there were 50,000 Excess Winter Deaths in Eng/Wales (It was a bad flue year).

During the ‘unprecedented’ 2017 Indian Heatwave, 2,500 deaths were apportioned to heat.

      Eng/Wales Pop. is ~50m. India’s Pop. is around 1.3bn.

There are around 70m Indians living below the internationally recognised ‘extreme’ poverty line of living on less than $1.95 per day.

More than the entire UK Pop……none of whom live in extreme poverty.

Will someone please explain to me what’s wrong with a warming planet.
