Poor @CPotter got slapped with yet another weird label...

Anyways for me I look at the specs and I literally buy the cheapest garbage (not literal tho) on the market with the best specs...

Also the site linus states we should go to for into their specs image is literally called Unknown.jpeg...

Also, Also the response time requirement from black to white sucks... 8 frames? Assuming a 120FPS (xD) that's nearly 10ms...

Depends on which monitors you're thinking of when you say "most". If you're counting every single monitor on planet, the most might as well be 6-bit because probably everybody's mom and pop got a shit PC with a crappy monitor lol. These so called "gaming" monitors tend to be 8-bit. Some professional oriented displays are truly 10-bit without FRC. Some, with even much higher end internal LUTs like 14-bit and above. Comes down on monitor quite a bit.

Huh, my 10 year old TV is 10 bit, I never knew that so many people had to deal with monitors that get colour banding...

That really sucks.

Do you notice it often?

Is it as obvious as this?

Image result for 8 bit monitor

My current Innolux / Samsung VA monitor is not quite good enough for me to tell the difference down there. I need to take out my BDM3275 for that, and calibrate it a bit. It's going back to its place in 2 days though, and the Vega is going back into its box. No more Freesync but I prefer IQ over it anyway.

TVs are bit of a different story you know, even those from junk brands use good quality panels when you get to 32" and above. On PC monitors, you have hoards of TN panels that are 6-bit + FRC and such.

Linus, your eventualy going to have to start differentiating Quantom Dot technolgies, so it would be best to do so now.

Samsung's 'QLED' tech is nothing more than an enhancement layer. A filter for the backlight in traditional LED LCD technology to better match the desired color.

So, 'QLED', whilst it does technical use a type of QD technology, isnt the 'true' QD that enthusiasts were hoping for. Its kinda the 'cheap' QD. Which is why for those in the know, the price for these QLED TV's is a tough pill to swallow.

Active Matrix LED displays on the other hand use Electro Emmisive nano particles which produce their own light, similar to OLED, however these are inorganic. This is the 'true' QD technology which far surpases traditional LED LCD, and QLED LCD. It could even surpass OLED as it would not have the perma image retention issue.

However, much like OLED, this 'true' QD tech would require significant changes in manufacturing process, which is expensive, hence why Samsung is content with milking traditional backlight LCD technolgies with the like of their 'QLED' marketing stratagy.

QLED displays sound amazing and super high tech, but its all marketing, the type of QD being used by samsung is just a filter, yes it helps, but it doesnt fix the primary drawback of LCD displays..the backlight. Even FLAD and Micro LED wont fix that issue, it sure helps, but it doesnt fix it.

The sooner we move away from non emmisive display technologies the better.

The fact that VESA released the DisplayHDR 400 standard really tells you all you need to know about VESA's willingness to hold its member companies to an adequate standard.  "Peak luminance of 400 nits"??

Yeesh.  ?

400 nits is fine for most people in most cases. It, along with the rest of the standards requirements are better than a lot of budget monitors and TV's out there, so if HDR becomes the go to standard that all screens have the lowest spec is still better than the current low end crap that they have.

Think of it like the 80Plus standards for PSU's. Before PSU's were often pretty terrible in efficiency. Once it got to the point where not being certified was costing sales the entry level spec had been raised to a more acceptable level.

I've always been struck by what good marketing the precious metals system is.  Very intuitive.  Hence why the Affordable Care Act in the United States uses it for its non-Medicaid health insurance.  "Bronze," "Silver," "Gold," and "Platinum" are much better names than "60% Actuarial Value," "70% Actuarial Value," "80% Actuarial Value," and "90% Actuarial Value."

Point is, I'd be more confident that you're right if VESA had bothered to come up with a decent naming scheme, rather than "DisplayHDR 400/600/1000."

A few question.

1. Vesa Display HDR certified products are geared towards gamer or content creators or hybrid for both?

2. Would you recommend to anyone who are not tech savvy and just looking for a good looking monitor to just buy one from their certified products?

3.In a similar price range,  would the certified products be natural be better looking than those that aren't?
