WORLDUS halts funding for UN agency for Palestinian refugeesPalestinian school girls walk past sacks of flour outside a United Nations' compound at the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip on Sept. 1, 2018. The United States announced on Aug. 31, 2018 it was halting funding for the United Nations' agency for Palestinian refugees after declaring the organization was "irredeemably flawed." Washington has long been the UN Relief and Works Agency's (UNRWA) largest donor but is "no longer willing to shoulder the very disproportionate share of the burden," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.SAID KHATIB, AFP/Getty ImagesGirls sit inside a classroom at an UNRWA school during the first day of a new school year in Gaza City on Aug. 29, 2018.Felipe Dana, APA Palestinian man carries a sack of flour inside an United Nations' compound after receiving food supplies at the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip on Sept. 1, 2018SAID KHATIB, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian men collect aid food at a United Nations' compound in the Rafah refugee camp.SAID KHATIB, AFP/Getty ImagesA Palestinian man sits by sacks of flour inside an United Nations' compound at the Rafah refugee camp on Sept. 1, 2018.SAID KHATIB, AFP/Getty ImagesA UN truck transports sacks of flour outside a United Nations' compound at the Rafah refugee camp on Sept. 1, 2018.SAID KHATIB, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian school girls play at UN Relief and Works Agency's (UNRWA) school in the Rafah refugee camp.SAID KHATIB, AFP/Getty ImagesSaeb Erekat, secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, speaks to journalists in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Sept. 1, 2018. Palestinians reacted angrily to a U.S. decision to end all funding for the UN agency that assists millions of refugees, seeing it as a new policy shift aimed at undermining their cause. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said the American administration was invalidating future peace talks by "preempting, prejudging issues reserved for permanent status" negotiations.AHMAD GHARABLI, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian refugee students attend a lesson at a United Nations Relief and Works Agency school, in the Al-Baqaa Palestinian refugee camp, near Amman, Jordan on Sept. 2, 2018.AHMAD ABDO, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian refugee children attend a class at a UN school in the Al-Baqaa Palestinian refugee camp.AHMAD ABDO, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian refugee pupils wait outside a United Nations Relief and Works Agency school in the Al-Baqaa Palestinian refugee camp.AHMAD ABDO, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian refugee children play outside a United Nations school in the Al-Baqaa Palestinian refugee camp,AHMAD ABDO, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian refugee girls in Jordan get ready for the first day of the Amman New Camp preparatory school which is run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on the outskirts of Amman, Jordan on Sept. 2, 2018.AMEL PAIN, EPA-EFEPalestinian refugee children attend a school financed by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency at the Arroub Palestinian refugee camp near Hebron, in the West Bank, on Sept. 2, 2018.HAZEM BADER, AFP/Getty ImagesA Palestinian man sits by bicycles at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency's Fawwar Palestinian refugee camp in the southern West Bank, near Hebron, on September 2, 2018.HAZEM BADER, AFP/Getty ImagesPalestinian girls exit from a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in the Askar refugee camp east of Nablus in the occupied West Bank on Sept. 2, 2018.JAAFAR ASHTIYEH, AFP/Getty ImagesRefugee schoolchildren attend a ceremony to mark the return to school at one of the UNRWA schools at a Palestinian refugee camp Al-Wehdat, in Amman, Jordan, Sept. 2, 2018.Raad Adayleh, APA Palestinian refugee in Jordan walks past a 'no weapons allowed' sign outside a clinic of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), at the new Amman camp on the outskirts of Amman, Jordan on Sept. 2, 2018.AMEL PAIN, EPA-EFEFeatured Weekly Ad
