The 30 Under 30 Asia Artists Tackling Social Issues Using Unconventional Mediums

This article is more than 5 years old.

As it goes, the personal is political, and these young artists in Asia are taking to the streets, Instagram and their own bodies to make a statement. Meet three millenial artists on this year's 30 Under 30 Asia list tackling societal issues using a variety of unconventional mediums.

Archie Oclos, a native of Philippines paints street murals, shining a public light on socio-political issues otherwise discussed in hushed tones. From examining his country's war on drugs to critiquing the treatment of local groups in his community, his street art make bold statements about sensitive subjects.

Taiwanese-born and New York-based John Yuyi largely uses Instagram as a platform to aptly express the anxieties and self-reflection of a generation addicted to social media. Her subjects (sometimes herself) are adorned with temporary tattoos, a medium that perfectly memorializes both the permanence and impermanence in the digital age.

Stanislava Pinchuk maps out political conflicts around the world–be it the plight of refugees or disenfranchised groups–on paper, skin and tapestry. The delicate and daunting task is apt for the Australia-based, multi-hyphenate artist who calls many places home.
