Not only was he the first foreigner to headline the festival, he is now the first non-South African to win the Oppikoppi Music Festival Heavyweight Legend Award.

Since 2010, the Oppikoppi music festival has bestowed the honour of tribute shows to some of South Africa’s veterans in the music industry.

From Valiant Swart to Ready D, the late Bra Hugh and even Mafikizolo, the list of honourees have been diverse.

Since Walter Wanyanya took over management, Tuku’s legend status has received a brand new lease of life with several high profile shows across the world and a snazzy Twitter account.

In honouring Tuku the festival said:

Oliver Mtukudzi merits double helpings of love, thank you’s and legendary status belt-driven accolades. This year’s OppiKoppi tribute artist started performing in Zimbabwe in 1977. That’s 41 years of Tuku Tunes.

His husky voice has become the most recognised to emerge from Zim and onto the international scene and he has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond.

We are lucky to have lived in the time of the great Tuku.
