Woman set to be banished from Delta community for reporting her husband who allegedly had sex and impregnated their 14-year-old daughter

Woman set to be banished from Delta community for reporting her husband who allegedly had sex and impregnated their 14-year-old daughter

Activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, has written an open letter to the Delta state government for immediate action to be taken as members of a community in the state hace concluded plans to barnish a young woman who reported her husband after he allegedly had sex, impregnated and procured an abortion for their 14 year old daughter, Chidinma.

According to Gwamnishu, the crime was committed sometime in 2010 and the suspect is still in prison. Read his open letter below

Woman set to be banished from Delta community for reporting her husband who allegedly had sex and impregnated their 14-year-old daughter

OPEN LETTER TO:
1. GOVERNOR IFEANYI OKOWA
Executive Governor Delta State

2. HON. BARR. PETER MRAKPOR
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Delta State.

3. HIS ROYAL MAJESTY EMMANUEL EFEIZOMO II
Chairman Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers.

Mrs. Grace Eze’s husband raped their 14 years old daughter sometime ago and the said rape led to the said daughter’s pregnancy. The pregnancy was aborted at the instance of Mrs Eze’s husband in a bid to cover-up his iniquitous acts.

Woman set to be banished from Delta community for reporting her husband who allegedly had sex and impregnated their 14-year-old daughter

When Mrs. Grace Eze found out about the crime her husband had committed, especially in view of the sensitive nature as it involved the rape of a minor, it became imperative for detailed investigation, especially medical investigations, so as to ensure that the victim was free from any medical conditions; and indeed that the culprit faces the law for the embarrassment he had brought to his family and entire Deltans.

Flowing from the foregoing facts, Mrs. Grace Eze first reported the matter to husband relatives and Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation reported to the Police in fulfilment of our constitutional duty to report the suspected commission of crimes, and in a bid to secure professional guidance for a detailed medical investigation of her daughter’s health and emotional status.

We were extremely embarrassed and disappointed when we found out that some community leaders had summoned Mrs Grace Eze and gave her a list of items to compulsorily provide to “cleanse the land” because she reported her husband to the human rights and sought help for her daughter. The said list of items is herein annexed to this letter for your kind perusal.

Mrs. Grace Eze was further threatened that if she failed to comply with the directives of the said community leaders, she will be banished from the community and severely dealt with.

Worthy of note is the fact that the family of the person who committed the rape and orchestrated an abortion, has not been summoned to provide any items to “cleanse the land”. (The man still in Prison custody).

We see what is at play as a conscious effort to cover-up a crime and victimize Mrs. Grace Eze.

We are very aware of your influence and astute leadership in your and therefore urge you to intervene immediately in this case so as to salvage the image of this community and put a stop to the imminent threats Mrs Grace Eze has received from her community leaders.

We have elected not to petition the community leaders to the National Human Rights Commission, as well as proceed to court in a bid to safeguard and defend the fundamental rights of Mrs Grace Eze because we are confident that you will intervene and see that justice is done. No citizen of our country should be punished for exercising her constitutional or legal rights.

Kindly accept the expression of our esteemed regards as we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

Harrison Gwamnishu,
Director-General.
Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation

Apart from the Delta Igbos, all those other tribes in delta state (isoko, itsekiri, urhobo) are very backward, and no amount of western education can change their mindset, Even their stupid governor woke up today and decided to ban cow meat because of herdsman. And the man is supposed to be "educated", lol!

Everything listed there is not up 10,000. So why all this plenty talks. If the human rights are so concerned about the woman. Why not help her provide the listed items? Because of this white people, we no longer have respect for our custom and tradition. Am ve y certain and sure the list given to her was to cleanse the land for the abormination committed by their daughter and her husband. This is done everywhere. So there is nothing special about this. Am sure the person trying to sponsor this is looking for attention.

Laja, since it seems right that a man should rape the daughter and the wife harassed, threatened by the community for reporting incest, then may it happen in your family.

Laja you’re the most stupid person I’ve come across. Not just stupid but very wicked and heartless. How will your bloody eyes see that even one item on the stupid list is N10,000 cash. Your wife should watch you lest you rape your daughter. Animal

Laja, why don't you help her provide the said item? It will be a warm up for you when your own community will come for you. Because it is obvious, given your apparent support for the man's actions, that you are a practitioner yourself.

Some communities in Nigeria are just so far behind, in fact I will go as far as to say BACKWARD! Something that is clearly wrong, so called elders/community leaders will not see it. In Nigeria we just don't have laws that people adhere to. Is it not small Ghana that I'm reading that this same thing happened

This story doesn't make sense and appears incorrect. It is more likely that the fine was imposed on the family not the woman, in order to cleanse the land. Since the culprit (the woman's husband) is in jail; the only responsible person capable of representing the family is the wife (the victim's mother and the wife of the culprit). This tradition is a norm in all Igbo communities and sometimes such punishment can even be imposed on an entire clan, depending on the gravity of the offense.

Just exactly the point am trying to make. The headlines and stories are incorrect. The fine want because the woman reported the husband. But for cleansing the land from the abormination committed my the family

@jaja and @anon the story also says she reported the rapist to his family, said letter for "cleansing" should be sent to the family head who will definitely not be the woman. so if it ended up in her hands for her to be the one to pay, something is definitely fishy, I' m not Igbo, so i may be wrong but my understanding is this would be a 'mans's issue and no women involved in said cleansing

In Ghana a man is being jailed for impregnating his 14 year old daughter. In Nigeria, the ones reporting the crime are the ones being punished. For the useless person saying she should pay for ordinary 10 thousand, it is clear you shouldn’t be in this conversation. You won’t do what is right, instead you say we’re following western culture just to justify the nonsense you support. I hope the girl finds healing, this should stop being normal in Nigeria, it’s reporting and shaming that makes it less frequent. Well done mummy, it seems you can’t win in Nigeria though, if she did nothing she will be the worst mother if it got out later, but now this threatens mums who are scared to take action in the first place. And to the elders, it’s clear you can’t and shouldn’t be involved in all issues.

I just read up there that a man in Ghana was sentenced to 20 years for this same incest issue and Nigeria is banishing the mother of the child, which way forward?

I wonder what she's still doing in such barbaric community. She shouldn't have waited for them to banish her, she should have fled such toxic environment. I don't think she's safe there.

I thought it was the family that was fined, and may be banished? It is stigma crime that stains all blood relation and the community is exercising there power. She just need financial support at this stage , not fighting the community. Like the human right activist said they are not sueing the community.
